I've never been stuck in any of my all-wheel drive Subaru's. But then again I think twice before driving off into the unkown. That is one sweet Forester. I almost got one but settled on the Outback just cause it had a little more room in the back. When you lay the seats down it's got plenty of sleeping room.

The salesman thought I was nuts when I had him open up the back and lay the seats down. I crawled in, stretched out and then had him close the hatch. After I got out I said "I'll take it"....

That's one of the things I checked before buying a Forester Since I am on the short side, I fit in there perfectly. I was surprised at how much room these things have inside.

Now, this one is for the OP: Keep in mind that you can buy a car once you arrive to Fairbanks. There are a few fairly new to used car lots, and the largest one is "Affordable Used Cars." They should have a web site for you to look at their cars.

I had a two wheel drive Honda Accord for three years in Fairbanks and had no problem. However, you will be doing more driving that I do. I think the Subaru is a very good option. I currently have a Jeep Cherokee and I do like the 4 wheel drive (plus it's just the right height for the coffee drive-up). I wouldn't try a Prius in Fairbanks although they are probably okay to have in Anchorage.

You could also think about Green Diamond all season tires - they are a little more expensive but you only need the one set and don't need to change them twice a year.

I was out yesterday doing a transfer site run around town and I counted 23 Prisis around town in just the short time I was out and I wasn't looking super hard. The thing I don't like about them is the funky colors that they all seem to be. If you want one I don't see any reason why not to get it. I don't know that I would own one if I lived back on a private dirt road but on regular roads I don't think there is any trouble.

If you live in town and do only in town driving I don't see why any type of vehicle wouldn't work (as long as its winterized), but living outside of town is a different story. Subarus get around like no other on the ice, they have great weight distribution. But if you're like me an only have 2000 to spend on a vehicle and live outside of town, that's when you have to GET CREATIVE lol

i am not sure what part of Michigan you are in but i would bet you get more snow in your area in Michigan than in Fairbanks. I know northern michigan and the UP have temps in the -40 range and plugging in is very common there. So don't think that Fairbanks will be any worse, and buy a car that you would in Michigan for Fairbanks. Just add 30% more antifreeze because it is slightly colder -80.

I see many Toyota Yaris in Fairbanks, much higher than the average in most other cities.

I guess to be more specific, I will be driving to Eielson daily from Fairbanks. So, not just in town driving. I really have no idea how the roads to Eielson get during the winter, so I'm trying to be prepared for that. I'm not thinking of driving to Anchorage or anything

I do not drive in Fairbanks much. However the few times I drove between Fairbanks and Eielson in the winter I always found the roads to be in good condition. The snow I have encountered has always been very dry with little sticking to the roads. However, intersections get very slick due to the frost. A small suv or even a front wheel drive should be fine as long as you put good winter tires on it.

Fairbanks to Eielson is a well maintained 4 lane highway.
