As Others have said, it makes you look more toned, hides blemishes, and for the right person, not over done looks VERY nice.
I also have 'dated the rainbow' of hair and skin tone, and the woman I'm dating now is a runner in her late 30's who tans... I thought she was 10 years younger!
I have tattoos (well done and professionally done) and tanning, be it naturally or by artificial means, fades and distorts tattoos. I take very good care of my skin and haven't had a tan or burn in nearly 10 years. For my legs, I do use an aerosol product that smooths out my skin and gives it just a slight tiny of color, but even that's only for special events
Who knows? Women go nuts over trying to make themselves look as young as possible. It's ironic though because so many women like to tan, sun-bathe and use tanning salons and these things age you faster than anything.
I can't possibly be the only guy who prefers pale/fair complexions over temporary (and often fake) tans.....
I often date women of various ethnicity, from dark chocolate to pure snow complexions but one thing I've always preferred is the natural color of skin. Be grateful for what you were born with and flaunt it. I'm sure there are more guys out there just like me.
Ladies feel free to chime in.
Most people tan because they believe their skin tone is too light, it's "fashionable" or they enjoy tanning (may be addicted to the endorphin released through the process of tanning).
IMO; for aesthetic and a "feel-good" state of mind.
They tan because they are told by the current culture in the US that it looks good, just as Japanese women seek to preserve the look of milk white skin.
It is ironic that Americans are so big on being free & independent, and yet, have no problem falling in line for every fad in looks and fashion that comes along.
Personally, I love my white skin and avoid any tanning.
Using a tanning bed is one of the most harmful things you can do to your body. I'm talking as potentially-harmful as smoking, drug use, or heavy alcohol consumption. The level of cellular damage done to the body during a 15-minute tanning session is equivalent to smoking a pack of cigarettes. There is a "Tan de Soleil" next door to the Gold's Gym I work at as a personal trainer in Austin and about a year ago I began petitioning with city government to close them down-- along with all the other tanning salons.
Here be the kicker, y'all: The salons have known for years now how hazardous their products are, hence the waivers they make you sign when you begin using their services. I hazard to say that Big Tobacco has nothing on Big Tan when it comes to shameful, greedy, and reckless corporate tactics.
Having said all that, having a light to medium tan makes anyone look healthier and a bit thinner. A shapely, tanned hottie in a white bikini is one of the most beautiful creations on God's Earth.

Sometimes it's just because they wear clothes that expose their skin and just tan naturally, like in California, but as for fake tanning/spray-tanning: as long as it doesn't look too fake I don't mind it. I'm fine either way, I like variety. Sometimes I'm in the mood for a tanned girl, other times a more 'natural' look.
One thing I find interesting is how these days you see these pasty white guys with their tanned girlfriends. When did a lot of guys stop bothering about tanning? Maybe when they were told that wearing anything less than baggy pants 1/2 down their shins and tents with holes for their arms was considered unfashionable or gay for men?
I am already caramel colored, but I know several white women who tan. It is very popular in pageantry. It makes their clothes look good and most women here have tans anyway. i think they look great with a tan. Pale skin to me just looks unhealthy.
I think some people do just look ill without some color. I stay the color I was born with but if I am not eating right and exercising = bleghry. I get random compliments on the paleness from women and men. But I only think it looks good when my cheeks have that natural pink of health and with some make up on. I am SO glad I took my older family members' advice to skip tanning beds. Most people peg me at 18-21 based on visuals but I am 34. Tanning is the most damaging habit for skin. I do like to use the gradual tanner lotions sometimes for my legs though so I don't look like a cave fish. LOL
