About a month ago I woke up one morning and had a bag under one of my eyes. I thought it was because of lack of sleep and figured it would go away. Well I've had plenty of rest and it hasn't gone away. It's permanent.

I mentioned this to 3 of my girlfriends who are (48-53yo) and they all tell me that they've had similar experiences all within the last couple of years. They woke up one morning with a major sign of aging on their face that hadn't ever been there before. One suddenly had a double chin; another, overnight, got sagging jowls and droopy skin around her jawline; and another woke up to two very, very deep creases from the sides of her nose to her chin!!

Is this how it happens? I am 51yo. I and my friends are slim and have a healthy lifestyle. I always assumed aging was a gradual process, especially if you're in decent shape. I never thought you just wake up one day with your face changed for the worst.

What have your experiences, or the experiences of your friends been like? How old were you and what were the signs? To those of you who are older, is this how things progress--you periodically just wake up to discover significant changes to your face overnight?

It's funny you should ask this, because I shared dinner with a close girlfriend this week. I'm 35yo, she's in her early 50s. Skin was our topic of discussion

We, too, have healthy lifestyles, and she is very fit. She was my gym training partner for years, and she still works out several times a week and is currently training for a marathon.

I've noticed a very gradual change in my skin over the last 10 years, from 25yo to my now 35yo. I'm very conscious of it, and stay on top of it with all the best things I can do, and that science offers.

However, my girlfriend, is having a different experience.

She was telling me about her experiments with different treatments to fix her recent menopause, and not having went through it yet myself, I was curious as to the details. One symptom she mentioned was a dramatic instant (not gradual) change in her skin (well before her hot flashes, etc. started). I'm not a doctor, and I can't chime in on my own personal experience since mine, so far, has been gradual, not over night, but I just thought that might be one possible cause.

Luckily, with advances in science, there are so many ways to correct just about anything. (Thank goodness! )

Whatever you learn, good luck, and keep us posted on what you try that works to fix it.

I developed crow's feet around my eyes when I smile. I must have been around 45 when I noticed them. I'm not sure know whether it was sudden or gradual (& I just didn't realize it). I just glanced in the mirror one day when as I was smiling and there they were.

Hormonal effects on the body can cause pre-programmed cell growth, change and death at specific times in your life. For example, onset of menstruation, breast development, acne, menopause, etc. Maybe the sudden signs of aging in the face are a result of pre-programmed cell death.

I'm starting to get a line around my mouth. I can see it when I look at myself in the mirror when I smile. It's very faint but it wasn't there before...

It makes sense that these sudden changes may be hormonally related, since so many other rapid changes taking place in the body due to hormones.

It seems unusual to see faint lines at your age. I noticed that you're from Florida. Probably a lot of that is due to sun exposure.

Have others in your family seen facial lines at very young ages?

It is but I've had a lot of sun exposure over the years. I used to spend a lot of time out in the boat and beach as a child. On the weekends, I would be outside all day playing. I didn't always keep up with sunscreen. I also used to walk home from school with the sun right in my face. My face has gotten burnt pretty badly a couple times.

But I'm starting to take care better care of my skin. I stay out of the sun more, am using moisturizer and I use sun screen whenever I go outside. My skin does look better than it in the past few years.

As for my other family members, yes, they had the same things around my age. But maybe more so because they lived in an era when the dangers of too much sun wasn't as well known. They were all pretty tan looking although naturally, they're "white". I was pretty tan looking myself when I was a little child. My grandparents and older ancestors all used to spend hours out in the hot sun with no protection. Eventually they all started to get wrinkles in their 40s.

At 57, I don't really remember and it is a minor detail now. I tried some of the skin products only to develop tiny fat cells things which went away when I stopped. Some made my skin and eyes burn - how could this be good for my skin. Once menopause passes, you will see changes that exercise and potions won't really help. You can keep telling yourself that they do but exercise, staying hydrated and a healthy diet will benefit you much more. Hair texture changes and skin becomes paler. But, what counts is you on the inside and at this time, it counts twice as much as when you were younger. Don't spend that much time looking in your mirror because you'll notice the changes so much more than those around you. I always admired the natural look of aging women and men.
