I probably wouldn't even notice it and I would never comment on it unless I was asked for my opinion.

No. My sister has one or two dry patches around her elbows. She can't seem to find anything to fix the problem, including seeing a dermatologist. It happens. We're all different.

hmm.... Now that I think about it, I wonder if it's about perceived poor grooming habits. That's the only thing that makes sense to explain the reactions I got.

I think OP you need to differentiate what sort of dry you mean:
1. dry patch (like visible flaky skin)
2. dry patch (like eczema or psoriasis) that is scaly in appearance
3. ashy skin due to insufficient moisturizer

In my estimation, types 1 and 2 are lumped into the unsolvable skin problem section so no one particularly cares, even if they notice.

I'd say type 3 is a different case, as it is easily treatable. And to overly generalize here, black americans (especially upwardly mobile ones) have been trained/taught we will be judge more harshly for our appearance, particularly in professional environments, so putting your best foot forward (including your grooming) is critical. So being ashy is sort of a proxy for poor grooming. And for another subset of people, so is wearing your hair natural.

who ever told you that needs their mouth washed out with soap. I can understand a family member mentioning dry skin and wondering if you had a problem. My own daughter has done this to me a few times. I have very dry skin and sometimes in a hurry, I forget to put lotion (actually I use oils) on my legs. She will mention it. I am glad she does, but if anyone else said something, a friend or a co worker I would think they had no manners...Don't let them get to you. Some of us, even with lotion have dry skin for no reason. Sometimes it is caused by a defect. Like in my case, part of the cause is low thyroid. .

I have psoriasis and people judge me because of it. That's why I'd never judge anyone on this.

Never heard of this. I don't know if this is a cultural thing or not. My black friends do put on lotion more than I do, but they have nice skin and I wouldn't call it dry. I never thought about it before. I guess I should use more lotion....

I actually don't notice such things, as I don't scrutinize folks that closely!
