I began wearing polo shirts when (merino?) ones became available at affordable prices in Marks & Spencer, but they were sold as ‘jersey shirts’, maybe because the wool was knitted to stretch some: and I liked them too. My first cotton polo shirts were expensive and slightly fitted ones by Lacoste: and I didn't care for them. Since then, I've been getting the basic cotton or pima ones, all with hemmed sleeve or long-sleeved ones, each with a breast-pocket, from L L Bean. And that I have more of them than I can count indicates that I'm very pleased with them. The women's models don't seem to be available with that pocket though. And so, if a girl were inclined to carry a bunch of pencils, pens, slide-rule, spatula, and spectacle-case with her, I don't know what she'd do. (Girl-scientists are sexy, no?) The best one that I ever had was in botany bay wool and from Liberty & Co
Brooks Brothers, Lacoste, and Ralph Lauren are some of the better quality brands. Shop for them in person, as they are all cut differently. RL and BB tend to cut them a little longer. Some brands shorter. The key to a good polo is to shop for the right fit, not necessarily by brand.
I have had problems with polos shrinking. Especially with RL Polo. Lacoste is about the same as well. I always buy up a size to keep that from happening.
If you are short. Both my husband and I are long in the torso, and I've bought my last RL Polo because they shrink in the length. If I want cheap shrinkage, I can get it at Walmart.
