One friend tells me "anytime that shorts and a tee is acceptable". Another friend said "only to the beach or running a quick errand". Wh is right?

What about social events? Let's say to an event smaller scale event like a BBQ or family gathering to a larger scale event like a graduation party. Is it ever acceptable for guys to wear sandals or flip flops or are closed shoes socially acceptable? (assuming the guy's feet are taken care of)

Are sandals or flip flops more socially acceptable? The friends I asked (who are female) said flip flops are better. That baffled me since flip flops are the most open sandals there are. Figued a more closed sandal would be more socially acceptable.

I want to make an effort to get away from the shoes/socks and not a boat shoe guy so thought I would go with some type of sandals or flip flops. Wasn't sure I could get away with that outside of a super casual or beach situation though. I am a mid 30s male if that makes a difference.

Whenever they want although preferably when their toenails aren't funky colors and toes aren't all mangled looking.

How about this; wear what the hell you want to wear. If you feel like sandals, then wear them then. This whole "my friends said" is idiotic.

I do not understand this whole flip flop/sandal mania that goes on, it is just something to wear on your feet, yet it gets so many people riled up.

Anytime it's appropriate with the outfit, assuming good foot hygiene.

I wear sandals in the summer or for hiking/beach (mine are hiking sandals). I don't like flip flops.

Only with shorts. Only if it's above 25c.

I would not wear them to work, but I would not wear shorts to work either. As soon as I'm not at work or for anything formal, they're fine.

I wear sandals/flip flops as much as possible. Usually by late March/early April where I live it's warm enough, and stays warm enough into October. I wear them to my office and change into my uniform once I get there. In the Marines a lot of guys do this, but you do sometimes run into one or two who believe it's inappropriate. Thankfully I've been in long enough to be able to just disregard most of these types. Besides, my flip flops cost more than a lot of the shoes people wear. Not that cost is the driving factor, but it conveys good taste and quality. It's not like I'm walking in wearing those plastic/foam flip flops.

Nothing bad or wrong with men wearing it whenever or wherever, but to me I prefer wearing them by the beach, pool or taking out to the trash, walking the dog or watering the plants.

Other than that I prefer sneakers.

Nobody is "right" because its going to depend on your region and social circle.

Personal opinion: sandals and flip-flops belong at beaches, pools, and gym showers. Not great for a backyard BBQ but its unlikely most folks will care. Slip-ons/loafers or- yes, boat shoes are better.
