Seriously? In Scotland they're cool. In movies they're cool. On the streets of a US city? (other than Halloween or St. Patrick's day) It's gonna look a little odd. In the board room where you'd like to be taken seriously? Oh hail no!
I'm largely Scots-Irish. I love my heritage. I like kilts. But not as a typical, every-day sight.
I agree with the above it does depend on setting, we're not talking everyday wear say in NYC, but, then again, I could get used to these guys any day of the week.
I am Irish and would wear one authentically . However, for those of you that have, they are made of wool and would be scratchy , wouldn't they? Especially in the summer with high humidity and temps like here in Texas?
Yes, if you wear an authentic kilt it's going to be heavy and very warm in hot weather. They're made of several yards of thick wool--and they're also very expensive. My friend that I mentioned above generally wears one from Sportkilt (you can look that up) though a true Scot would probably be insulted by it.
Of the Clan Buchanan here. I'd wear one, but as Amontillado says, they are awfully expensive. And, there would be several to purchase. There are over 20 different registered tartans for Clan Buchanan.
My son and I both have kilts specifically for hiking in the heat of the summer. Both made by Mountain Hardwear. They are not a fashion statement, they just make sense.
I have suffered horrendous gald several times. 15 years ago I was on a 50 mile backpacking trip on the Appalachian Trail and it was high heat/high humidity and it was miserable after 10 miles. I honestly could not walk 'straight' on the last leg of our journey.
We do a lot of hiking in Montana and when I saw these I said- "Oh yeah..". Man am I a convert. It makes living outdoors A LOT easier in a lot of ways. Airflow = less moisture = no gald. Easy 1 step process to do your duty when there are no facilities.. The fabric doesn't get wet with sweat so you can wear the thing longer without washing..
Here is my son in Glacier with a group- rocking his kilt and Stetson…
He's a convert. Now two more older teens in his group have them. They love them.
No- it's not a traditional kilt. We don't care. It's all about comfort and utility.
And yes- I'm Scots-Irish so I don't really give a damn what anyone thinks about it, lol.
Those of us who are hooked on The Outlander series, LOVE a man in a kilt.
In Southern Pines, NC, a civic group had a fundraiser, Kilts For Kindness, and some of the merchants wore them to bring attention to the cause.
I like the idea of men from that heritage wearing kilts for formal occasions.
