I typically cut my own hair (thanks, Brad Mondo!), but every once in a long while, I want someone else to do it. I only get cuts, nothing else. If the stylist was fun to talk to, and did a great job, I give them $20 in cash, which is almost a dollar per minute because I don't have some fancy hairdo.
The 3 salons I've used over the past 20+ years have been owner-operator types. The stylist did everything so the tip was handed directly to them. Sometimes it was included in a paper check (no convenient place to get cash or they didn't choose to pay CC fees), other times included as part of a CC charge.
Each hairdresser in the salon handles the payment herself with a cube thingy on her phone. I can add in a tip. I think it’s about 20% or about $7. There are no separate shampoo girls where I go.
Same here. Each stylist has their own room and handles their own payments. I tip the highest (25%) available on her phone with my credit card. She takes her time and does a great job with my very thick and wavy hair. The best hairstylist I’ve ever had.
My stylist works at a salon but prefers cash. The haircut costs $65 (which is cheap by San Francisco standards). I usually hand him $80 as I am leaving.
At my previous salon, payment was done at the front desk. You could either add the tip to the credit card or leave cash. If you tipped in cash, there were envelopes for each stylist at the desk. The receptionist would take the money and put it into your stylist's envelope.
I always tip my stylist in cash. She gets a 20% tip. Sometimes she walks me to the receptionist where I pay for the cut. If she walks me there, I hand her the tip. For the person who shampoos my hair, I leave her $6 and put it in an envelope where I write her name on it and it gets put into a locked box with a slot for the envelopes.
I put the hair cut on a credit card. Then the receptionist will make my next appointment and give me a card with the info.

I've never been to a hairdresser with a reception desk. My current one owns the shop and rents booths to others. All handle their own payments.
I pay for the service and the tip in cash. I get color every 6 weeks but hair cuts only as needed which isn't too often with my hair. I know she takes other forms of payment I just prefer cash for this.
I add the tip to the charge for the haircut on my c/c. Stylist is an independent so she gets it directly.
