This goes for snakes as well. We live in a pretty rural setting, trees on both sides, no homes acrss the street and we still rarely see snakes. One was in the garden a couple of years ago, it moved so fast I have no idea what kind in was. We have seen a couple baby snakes, and yes, one was a copper head, but they have been about 2 inches long and dead. I do realize, where there is a baby there was a mommy and daddy. We had rattle snakes in the hills where we lived in So Ca and that was not nearly as rural as here.

Thankfully, that rules out it being a copperhead, since they are 5 - 6 inches long at birth.

Maybe it was, heck what do I know? Our grandson in law was pretty much raised here and in Hot Springs, he is the one that told us what it was. I am not going to check the yard to see if I can find mom and dad.. I would love to think it was just a little guy, not 5 or 6 inches and not a Copperhead. As much as I don't live in fear of what is out in those forests, I still get a creepy feeling when I think about that snake...

Answer to ticks, chiggers, poisoness spiders(and tarantulas) and snakes---move to Alaska. Cost of Living is horrendous(housing and groceries), but none of these. A musher friend of ours had a dog die(had a necropsy done) by recluse bite, but the spider was brought in most likely on dog food shipment from lower 48. No problem with any of this stuff-only grizzlies and ill-tempered moose.
