Hi, I'm new to this site, but I have been lurking for a few weeks now.

anyway, this is my problem I recently graduated from a college in NYC, and I just got accepted to Florida Gulf Coast University as a Transfer student.

I'm not new to the area. I mean I am new but I come down here in the summers since my mom and I got a Home is Port Charlotte about a month before Hurricane Charley hit.

My grandmother and my Uncle wanted to know why I was going to school down here. So I told them. Their defense is that there are not any opportunites here in Port Charlotte/Fort Myers area.

Being that I'm a transfer, I should be able to obtain my next degree within 2 years.

So are my Grandma and Uncle right? Should I stay in NY? I felt that it was so easy to get a job down here. and i did get a summer job really quick. I was hoping for a change for pace. So what do you guys think I should do?

I really wrestled with this decision of moving down here. I was not sure if I would find things to do around here besides going to Walmart.

I was supposed to leave on the 11th to move down here. But being that I'm still undecided. So I decided to wait and book my flight for the 18th, because I am supposed to start orientation on the 24th.

Thank you in advance for reading my post.

My little sister-in-law was accepted there, and she, too, will be going this fall. She's putting it off, too, but this is her 1st year out of high school, so that's normal. If you wanted a change of pace, that indicates that you were unhappy in NY. So, if you go back, you will likely face the same things you want to leave behind. If you really want a change, you should do it.
By the way, you said you were a grad. of NY. What are you going to school for now?
Perhaps considering that will help you make the best decision.
Good luck.

Most of Florida is lacking in the job market. Also, depending on what school, the ones in NY are much better than the ones in Florida. I'd stick it out for another 2 years then move to the area once you have a degree.

Assuming that you are going for a 4 year degree in your field? Tell me you are, then moving down here is the right choice because of the field that you have chosen. It will depend on your degree. There are lots of opportunities for teachers here.

My daughter just graduated with her BS in Childhood Education from SUNY. She had gone to college in Maine for two years and when she tranferred to SUNY she didn't have enough of the correct major credits. It took her an extra year to graduate. You have to be very careful that all your credits will transfer when applying to a different state, especially if you went to a CC.

Totally agree. I would add maybe even teach for a few years in NY. The starting salary in the City is $51,000 this year. Teach in NY for a few years and save up a little nest egg before moving.

Hi, i'm hockeymom72's daughter...

The starting salary in NYC for teaching is actually $45,000. Then in May it will go up a few thousand dollars more.

In Florida the teaching salaries are very low. At least in NY, you can get a roommate and live by yourself. In Florida, you'd probably have to live with your parents for quite some time. Think about that.

You can definatley get a teaching job in Lee County as the county is expected to lead the state in student growth for the second consecutive year. The pay probably will be lower but I think the cost of living in New York is more expensive than Florida.
