Is there a website where I can research the best school districts in Florida?

Or what school district would you would you rec from person experience?

I'm researching Elementary Schools. Also, is it much better to send your child to private school, as opposed to public school? How expensive are private schools (approx)??

This question comes up regularly here, and some use of the search function will turn up a lot of discussion. A lot of is comes down to expected correlations- the best schools are found in either the highest income areas, or areas with high parental education levels.

I'm a product of Hillsborough County Schools...

I would consider them to be above average. Depending on where you live.

My vote is for Sarasota. Fantastic schools, beautiful beaches and lots for the kids to do.

Sarasota county has one of the best school systems in the state of Florida. It also has Pine View School for the Gifted, which was ranked the top school in Florida and one of the top schools in the Nation. It is a public school and the requirements are that you live in Sarasota county, have an IQ of 130 or more, pass the achievement tests required and have teacher recommendations. I have two children that attend PV and we are more than pleased with the school. It services grades 2nd-12th. Here's some more info on that subject:

There are many other fantastic school in Sarasota county. Here's a website where you can see how the schools are rated:
School Accountability Report...
or www.GreatSchools.com

Here are the school districts by zone: http://www.sarasotacountyschools.net...lrp/zones.aspx

Sarasota ranks as one of the top districts in the state by a number of measures, including test scores, graduation rates and teacher compensation.

Private schools vary greatly depending on what they offer, where they are located, etc. I think the public schools are fine in Sarasota county. We've done public and private.

Actually often overlooked Brevard County has the best schools in the state overall. In terms of Elementary Schools, 4 out of the top 10 in the state are located there. Two Brevard County high schools are in the top 10 as well. Also worth noting, none of Brevard's top-ranked schools are charter or magnet schools.

We lived in DeBary for a couple of years and for family reasons had to move back to Indiana. We are now making plans to move back and looking at the Sarasota area. We left just after the three hurricanes and heard all the horrific stories about housing insurance and housing taxes. Can anyone tell me what is going on in the Sarasota area as far as hurricane insurance, housing taxes? I figure it is considered a Category 1 area but is it impossible to get decent insurance at an affordable price in that area.

You really can't go by districts here because there are always going to be some down schools. It's all about finding that top school in a district and living in the right area.
