My husband and I are considering a move next year from NY. We have 9 year old twin boys and school is very important. I know Boca has a great reputation for having good schools...but from what I understand so does Aventura.

Boca is mostly populated by old people; Aventura is much more kid and family friendly

I'd also suggest Sunny Isles Beach which is just over the causeway from Aventura on the beach. It's very family oriented and there are tons of brand new spacious oceanfront condos from the real estate bust that are selling for cheap.

I would highly recommend checking out Weston, west of Fort Lauderdale. It has the best public schools in the area, beautiful homes and a large number of transplants. Good luck!

Nice to see someone, who is thinking like me
.
We also moving to Miami area from Toronto Canada and we have 2 kids too. Ages 8 and 5 we are in our late 30th and enjoy social life, both of us working from home. Now to your question, after substantial research we think Aventura is much better bet. Proximity to action very good schools and nice population, it's also close to the beach. Also consider Sunny Isles i loved it and we bought property there just lately. what's your budget ?

which school will your children attend?
We want to rent initially, no matter where we end up. The budget for that is up to $3500 for 3/4 br. I do love the location of Aventura. It really is close to everything that we enjoy (beach/Miami).
The only reason I am hesitant (and considering Boca) is the schools and living space.
I heard that there was a lot of overcrowding iin the schools. Which may not be true. If anyone can clarify that would be great!
Also I've never lived in a high rise...and not sure that I want to. Are there houses in the area well?
What about hurricane scares? Is the risk higher in Aventura vs Boca which is more north?
Again, any input/opinions are EXTREMELY welcome and appreciated!

Boca is not old...and the "old snowbirds" aren't just here in Boca they are all over South Florida...and Boca is actually quiet young these days much younger than when I would visit and so many Young Families are moving here..we love it...and Tons of kids here as well, our friends in Aventura would love to live here but all their family is south of Miami and its just too far for them...

You need to look at the schools and compare them in my opinion dh works in Miami and has co-workers who live in aventura and boca and let me add they love the Boca schools and his co-worker isnt in love with the Aventura schools which was why we decided to stay in Boca..we were looking in Weston Definitely not our cup of tea, we looked in Cooper City it was ok and we would have loved being close to miami beach as well, but the schools werent what we were looking for so we decided against moving and DH does the commute from here...Also remember Opinions are just that and I really would look online at the accountability reports and do your comparision...the summer the schools also give school tours, however you might not have the chance to meet with anyone but its worth a shot...Again Aventura is Beautiful and close to the Water....

Boca has better schools than Aventura. Also, while your children are young now, they will be growing up soon. Aventura is nice....but there is little buffer between it, and some seeder areas of North Miami Beach, Hallendale (which is now casino-land), and North Miami. Even Miami Beach can spell disaster for a curious teenager that is "exploring". I'm 30....and almost all of my friends who grew up in Miami Beach said that their was no shortage of drugs and hookers available for teenagers. And this was 15 years ago (it hasn't improved).
