I'm not saying PSL is "South Florida" --- but Port St. Lucie is not quite north enough to be "Central" Florida, and Orlando has no influence in the city --- in terms of media, etc.

Can you get the Orlando newspapers in Sebastian?
Never seen any. But I don't really look.

I'm gonna put this to rest and this will be the law of the land. .

SOUTH FLORIDA consists of 3 counties.... Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach. That's it. Saint Lucie, sorry, but no. Saint Lucie is more like central Florida...

Saint Lucie will have to become it's own metro area. South Florida has already been established. Even geographically, saint lucie does not fit the bill. Sorry Saint Lucie, but you're just not grown enough yet. You're still a wittle wittle baby in central Florida.....lol jk

PSL doesn't count as central FL either. "Central FL" is generally considered the triad of Orlando/Daytona/Melbourne, and the surrouding areas in between. The TV stations, newspapers and even NPR overlap in those cities.

Honestly, From basically Vero on down past PSL is the treasure coast. That inbetween land far enough away from Orlando or Miami/FTL

I like the idea of "coasts" that makes it more simple. But, purely hypothetical, Vero is considered the "beginning of the tropics" an imaginary line extending from Vero to Bradenton. I realize that it's not really the tropics, but it doesn't stop them from saying it. Wouldn't this be a factor in considering "South Florida" ? Something I'll have to ponder whilst sitting 11 miles into the northern Tundra.

We should just face the fact that Florida is a geographical cluster with special designations like "South Florida" (which consists solely of the southeast coast) and the University of South Florida in Tampa as prime examples. Naming Port St Lucie part of the Treasure Coast is about as defining as the Emerald Coast or First Coast. Add it to Central Florida and then at least people can guess within a hundred miles or so of where in Florida it's located.

Hey, how about we use the USDA hardiness map. Zone 9b. Hmmmm. I like the Orwellian undertones.

For the 6 years we lived in Vero Beach we considered ourselves to be living on the Treasure Coast, out of the fray of South Florida. When we went to South Florida, it was considered a day trip. As far as news coverage, we picked up PB stations, not Orlando stations, and it would have to be a heinous crime or a landfall tornado for them to even mention Vero Beach on the nightly news. It's pretty much no man's land.

It seems it has happened sooner than I thought. U.S. Census Bureau releases 2012 population estimates for states, counties and metropolitan areas | Dilemma X

I also think it is safe to say that the Florida megalopolis is a reality.

Why do you care about this issue so much? Do you work for the census department or something?

Being included in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Port St. Lucie, FL Metropolitan Combined Statistical Area is not the same as being included in the Miami metropolitan area, so needless to say Port Saint Lucie is still not part of the 1st team.
