With as many people who swim in alligator habitat I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often.

Well as the gator population has rebounded back into the millions and their habitat shrinks and ours grows, there is bound to be more incidents and interactions. Many gators now no longer have a natural fear of people as many of them see people in their daily environments, and even worse, people feed them causing them to associate us with food. We need to start doing a better job of educating people, particularly from young age, how to and not to interact with gators.

Also dogs seem to be high on the Alligator hit list..but once in a while when a pack of dogs get together they can return the favor with gusto.

Always assume that all freshwater bodies of water in Florida have gators in them. Always!

The chance of having a bad encounter with a gator is drastically reduced if a person is keenly aware of their surroundings and not lulled in by some false sense of security.

Living on the coast there is just no reason to swim in fresh water anything. Of course a bit different in inland areas. You've got to be careful. Even standing near shorelines I was always taught to never crouch down as a gator usually won't want to attack a human that looks fairly large standing up.

I do believe gator safety isn't taught much and the population has only been going up for gators. Passed by a ran over one on my way to work a few weeks ago on SW8th near the urban development line of Miami.
