We are planning a trip to Florida during Easter, with our seven year old kid. We have been to Longboat Key some years ago, and loved it. We are not sure whether we should go back, or if we should try Sanibel Island instead. For you who have been both places, what would you recommend? What is most fun for a kid? Are the beaches of similar quality? Is Sanibel Island more lively than Longboat Key? Or the other way around?

My wife and I spent a week on Long Boat Key several years ago and basically discovered you had to have a car to get on and off the island...there are several really good restaurants on the island that are frequented by the locals...but other than that...you will need a car...

We stayed at the Hilton...center of the island...it was kid friendly...and they have a shuttle to run you in and off the island...

Sanibel has a $6 toll to get on the island...if you decide you want to do some site seeing or eat off island...it gets to be a pain in the ars...we never stayed on Sanibel...but visited it 3 or 4 times during our stay on another vacation...the hotel we stayed at was at the foot of the bridge to Sanibel...another place that was kid friendly...both had nice pools...

You could try www.tripadvisor.com to view hotels in both area...many visitors post comments and perhaps the site might help you decide....

I think your child would enjoy Sanibel...you really do not have to leave the Island for anything, groceries, shopping, restaurants are all there. Beaches are great for shelling, hotel pools are fun and there are kayak rentals, bike riding all over the island (tandem), boat rides, etc... all to do on Sanibel and Captiva. I think Sanibel is more for kids than LB Key..Ding Darling Wild life refuge, The only Shell Museum in the US... CasayBel Resort is wonderful...full kitchens so you don't have to eat out three times a day. Who minds doing the dishes when you are looking at the gulf??? Just beautiful! Hope you decide to make it to my beautiful Island!!

I loved the pristine quality of the beaches in Sarasota but it did seem Longboat Key was a bit scene-y with an emphasis on shopping. I think your child would love the island ecology of Sanibel; we were very impressed by the preserved beauty and conservation efforts there. The hiking and touring options are both entertaining and educational. But either way, it's a tough choice. Can't wait to go back to Florida myself.

Thank you for your replies. I'm still a bit uncertain what to go for, and I guess we will end up where we find the best rental/resort available. I like that there are more shopping opportunities at Longboat, and I'm tempted by the shelling activities at Sanibel. Hard choice. But is it so that the beaches are just as good at Sanibel? Or are they better at Longboat?

I took a look at the resort, and it was unfortunately fully booked. It looked like something we would enjoy. So if there are any other tips to a good resort with full kitchen, I would appreciate it!
