Hello All,

So I got called into the office of the VP of my company today, and after about an hour of talking about the company and my future, he told me that the company would like to pay for me to go back to school and get a degree that is “work related”. I told him during that meeting, that my goal is to move to Florida as soon as I can. Knowing that, he told me that once I get the degree, my pay would obviously go up, but what he told me next shocked me. He said that once I finish school, he would obviously prefer me to stay with the company, but if I decided to leave once I graduated, it would be a lot easier to find a job in Florida.

So basically, my question is this. Of these 3 degrees, which one is in higher demand in Florida? Business Management, Accounting, or Manufacturing/Mechanical Engineering.

Thanks for our help!

I would say like in most places Business and Accounting majors are a dime a dozen, with Manufacturing/Mechanical Engineering being far more likely to be in demand though I can't speak to Florida specifically. This state doesn't have a balanced economy and given the demand to move here has a vast disproportionate amount of job seekers versus jobs in most any job sector outside of part-time hospitality/retail jobs.

Excuse me as I cough and gag. If your vp said you would have better opportunities in Fl then that person is not exactly in touch with market trends

Instead of reading the 'no jobs, low wage" baloney, try this site:

He didn't say I would have better opportunties in Florida. I told him that I want to move to Florida as soon as I'm able to get a decent job offer, and then he told me that if I did end up moving to florida, that it would be easier to land a job if I had a degree.

You are brave for telling your boss that. I wouldn't have said anything about moving. Chances are, that if for some reason cuts come down the pipe, you may be the 1st to go. Why would your company invest in you or keep you knowing that you already have your foot out the door?

I know that if I were your boss, I would not send you back to school if I knew you were leaving. And I would most likely cut you lose, if I knew I had to cut back in my department. Why keep you? I rather give someone else the opportunity to go back to school if I knew they were in for the long haul.

Must be a good company if they are willing to pay for you to go back to school? I never hear of that anymore, and also why would you tell him you want to move to Florida after you complete your education?

Figure you need 4 -5 years if your talking a traditional education. Have you taken your SAT test yet? Are you going to Yale?

Also the quote on Florida being a better place for getting a job is laughable at best. Maybe in the medical field, with the influx of Baby Boomers and wealthy people in need of needed medical care or unneeded vanity upgrades, that's probably the best field here, after that figure in VP of Dish Washing, VP of Fryers, Director of Hamburger Flipping.

'Business Management, Accounting, or Manufacturing/Mechanical Engineering."

Not really feeling those titles...Bean Counters are a dime a dozen, worst one would be "Manufacturing/Mechanical Engineering", Florida is not a place for tech jobs or manufacturing or ones that pay great.

If your talking a traditional education and based on those titles, those are easily 4 year degrees on average, hate to admit it but BS degrees are not really enough anymore employers want Masters Degrees now more than ever, look at the jobs "Masters Preferred".

Also take into account, in 4 years the COL here will be even higher and the population will be up as will competition for available jobs.

Landscaping, totally forgot that one. Spanish required though.

I always wondered how the pay scales are for landscapers, you have tiers of jobs, there is a hierarchical tier starting on the low end and moving up:

-Foliage Picker Upper or Coconut Collector
-Weedwacker Operator
-Weedkiller Spray Operator
-Edger Operator
-Blower Operator must be able to learn the craft of blowing leaves and grass trimming out on the main roads to disperse neatly.
-Tree Hedger/Trimmers, might require a Arborist license much like a hair stylist for hedges, bushes and trees.
-Upright Mowers Operator
-Riding Mower Operator
-Truck Driver CDL required.
-Supervisor

Probably a few I missed there, but that's how most of the big ones operate.
