Obesity is just another issue in America. There's tons of diseases, causes of death. He gets a lot of mileage out of obesity because he has a hidden agenda (he probably hates someone who is fat or something). Maybe he needs to advocate against anorexia (that's the other end of the spectrum and it's a disease too, a disease in the head).

Feeding cancer to the human body is fine for him; being fat is a sin. Go figure.

I'm a great believer in all things in moderation. Everything you mention is fine in reasonable amounts.Stimulants such as alcohol, tobacco and cannabis are all perfectly reasonable, if not harmless, and only become a problem if taken to excess.
The problem with obesity is that people who have lost their self-control with food then lose their self-respect as they become obese. The idea of a happy fatty is a misnomer.Every fat person I've ever met - and in America that's probably at least half the people I meet - wishes they weren't.
The problem with your post is pretending a massive social and medical problem doesn't exist. Unfortunately the statistics don't match up with this.
The real shame is seeing fat kids. And there are far too many of them.Kids who've parents have allowed them to grow fat as they grow up,sentencing them to a life of poor health and limited social and employment opportunities.
In my professional life I met many CEOs of large, successful corporations and there's no doubt in my mind that they and their companies operated a hidden discrimination policy against very fat people being recruited to middle-ranking and senior management positions.I remember speaking to one CEO at a conference and he told me, off the record, that it was his company's view that if a person didn't have enough willpower to control their calorific intake and exercise probably they probably lacked the perseverence, work ethic and stamina to rise up the corporate chain.
On a lower level the next time you visit your local Walmart just compare the size of the people behind the cash registers and the guy in the suit who runs it.

The other poster asked you a very good question "Do you want your kids around a smoker, a drug addict, a drunk, or a fat grandmother?" Being obese does not have the same repercussions as when you over-eat, you just have a limited potential in life(even though this is not always true). It is serious, but not as serious as drugs (btw, weed is a gateway drug for many people; there's no such thing as 'in moderation' when it comes to that. Some people control it, some graduate to hard drugs.)

The example you mentioned above of the guy you met in a conference, is flat out discrimination (so I have been told by a friend of mine in HR).

The two actual negative "gateways" of contemporary American society that seem almost taboo to discuss:
  • Alcohol; the most prevalent gateway drug.
  • Bad Parenting; the most prevalent gateway into a cycle of ruin.
