I am always pleased to meet a fellow ex- NYker. Always something to talk about for sure.

Most of the discussions are not about that, but are about others. What are the political currents at City Hall, Albany or even Washington? What policies are coming down the pike, how is X candidate going to affect or not affect. Immigration lately has been a hot topic. Obamacare and its changes after Law was passed, court decisions, etc. Foreign afairs, etc. Etc.

Since DeBlasio was elected Mayor, there is lot to discuss for City affairs. Changes are coming thick and fast. I work in Real Estate Finance, Development and Construction, so DeBlasio saying "we'll build 200,000 affordable apartments in the next several years", which is a very complex matter, not just zoning-wise, but others - that can be very important.

So, yes, some political discussions are intellectual in nature, some are practical. How can one not talk about this, unless one is hot-tempered, can't control himself, and think rationally?

Unfortunately, it's true. I used to live in New York and I can tell you that a lot of people in this country, not just Florida or the South, believe most New Yorkers are rude, obnoxious, unfriendly, and have an elitist attitude. Personally, I believe it is nothing more than an overblown stereotype. That being said, many seem to feel this way about New Yorkers as a group, but one will not be automatically disliked because he or she is from New York.

We covered the A.H.A a long time ago. The issues in the middle east came up. the consensus was unanimous - wipe out the terrorists. Lately the Russian situation came up a few times since a few of us fought the Cold War. Other than that, we tend to keep our discussions in reference to local issues here.

When I meet with or speak with my old childhood buddies we avoid politics since we are all democrats and realize that no matter what we think or feel about politics is going to make a difference. We came to that conclusion back in our high school days.

I learned some important lessons growing up on the streets of Brooklyn (East New York) and Queens. If you were a dick, disrespected others your parents might find you composting in a trash can. We learned very early in life that you have to earn respect. If you show respect, you'll get respect. Give others the benefit of the doubt, be honest, shoot straight without being rude or arrogant. Defend yourself, help others when being attacked, etc. etc.Never think you are better just because you come from somewhere, or are someone. Many of the lessons I learned the hard way.

My father worked for Chevron and often overseas, so my parents used to also live as expats, and took us abroad since young. NYC street education did us a great deal of good. I did 2 years of high school in Romania, and graduated HS in Bakersfield, CA. We also lived in Dallas, and a few other places.

I travel often to Florida for business, sometimes for long stays, same for Georgia, Alabama, NC, and other states. I used to also live in Dallas. Although I hail from Manhattan, I still get invited to BBQs in the lakes of Alabama / Western Georgia, and my friends who would remind you of Moonshiners. We joke, we laugh, we work together, never disrespecting them. I am also tolerant of their quirks, because I am sure I have plenty myself in their eyes. I am half-Jew, quarter Italian, and quarter Irish.

Just last week I was invited to a family dinner in Sanford, from one of the guys who works for me. 2nd generation Floridians. Loved the company, loved the food, got to speak with their adult kids, their own kids, their careers, etc. They promised to visit my in Manhattan.

So, no, my own experience tells me that it's not really the locals. It's your attitude, it's your posture, body language, etc. Other people pick up on it intuitively.

Just the "yankee" term thrown about and how we want to turn Florida into another NY...how we are responsible for every problem Florida has...I don't know...ask PhotoProp...she has a list...a long list of gripes against "northerners"...

The two big groups I see harboring disdain for so-called northerners:
  • Lazy, incompetent, insecure, undereducated, and/or unproductive native Floridians of all career levels.
  • Retirees who've relocated a thousand or more miles south in a futile attempt to escape from the hustle & bustle, and into some sort of grand geriatric utopia.

In fairness, there are a group of northerners that everyone should hate: the ones who couldn't hack it here for whatever reason, who choose to remain here, and who spend copious amounts of energy declaring the state, and not their own situation, "hell on earth."
