It is interesting what you see when looking at a crimes stats map. There are gated Over-55 communities that show up as a hotbed of burglary, etc.

Not really surprising. Burglars don't want to walk in on or have to confront the homeowner, and a lot of over-55 communities have very high snowbird populations. I'd expect a pretty high percentage of the break-ins happened from May to October or so when the home is vacant and looks it.

If you are going to use a gun for protection get training.
1. gun safety training.
2. home security training.
3. personal protection training.
Learning how to act in the moment of crisis, takes muscle memory, not book knowledge.
Officers die because they assume the range time is equivalent to the warrior mentality and it is not.
Failing to learn = failing to practice,=failing to be prepared, = failing to act,= dead.

Indeed. Self protection is not a lackadaisical procedure. It does not go like it does on TV.

Exactly, and is the poster kidding who thinks a security guard at the gate is making them safe....LOL.

You think some $9 an hour security guard or a 4 foot wall that anyone in halfway decent shape can get over is going to protect you, you very naïve.

There are home invasion robberies everywhere in Florida - including where I live (although there were more in the area where I used to live in Dade County):

3 Sought In Ponte Vedra Home Invasion | News - Home

Don't have a clue how many overall - or how the number compares with other states/areas.

I've lived in gated communities in Florida for about 40 years - and no community I've lived in has ever had a problem.

FWIW - based on my experience - the most common crime of this nature isn't the home invasion robbery - it's the driveway robbery. Where someone follows you home and robs you in your driveway. Even a friend of mine who was a federal judge was a victim of a crime like this (criminal wasn't too smart - an assault on a federal judge is a federal offense). Gated communities are very effective at preventing this type of crime. Robyn

That is an especially good reason to know where the police station is in each area you have business and to cary a camera at all times. IMO
