I live up North and am interested in Deland. I read about the "Garden District" developed by architect Michael Auth. Is this district a reality? How much of it has been developed? Where exactly is it located in Deland?

Thank you.

Default DeLand Garden District

The DeLand Garden District is a fascinating story of a neglected downtown neighborhood that nobody in the town or county could figure out how to fix -- until Michael Arth came along. It was aka "Crack Town."

Here is a link to a trailer on his documentary film that describes the process: New Urban Cowboy
http://youtu.be/vG0AEgNkB7Y

Michael Arth purchased homes in an area that nobody wanted to live in and restored/transformed them to attract new investors. This project allowed for the gentrification of downtown DeLand -- as people stayed away from the crime and homeless that once ruled the streets there. (You pretty much would never know this today).

He was also a solid voice in the community about not only about new pedestrianism (use your feet/bike vs. a car) -- but also about the "sense of place" created from Historic Preservation -- at a time ignorance demanded that "new" was better and the only local solution to blight.

It was an amazing transformation that turned the DeLand status quo over on it's head! (Most of the power brokers who blocked him are still eating crow today).

The Garden District runs from E Voorhis Ave off S. Woodland Blvd., and approx. boundaries are from S. Alabama Ave (West) to S Amelia Ave. (East) and E. Howry Ave (North) and E Walts Ave (South).

Parts of north downtown Daytona Beach are now being targeted for similar rejuvenation projects like the Garden District because these neighborhoods were built on the pedestrian model (in a town that made the auto famous)!

Default Beware of the Garden District in DeLand

Beware of Michael Arth and the Garden District. I rented for 6 years from Michael Arth, and I have to take him to court because he refuses to return my deposit as required by Florida Landlord Tenant Law because it is in dispute. He failed to reveal where the deposit is held, as required by Florida Landlord Tenant Law, and more.
