They more or less leave it to the local governments to deal.

Now, if you want to contribute something about the impact, good, bad or otherwise on Central Florida, fine. If you want to get into a SJW pizzing match just because you're bored, I'm pretty good at twisting things around myself and may or may not engage, depending on how interesting you make it.
Maybe its a cultural thing, but to most hispanics "marielitos" or association to the Mariel bay exodus is a derogatory term, and in general is just a bad analogy, like someone else said its no different than Detroit, If your concern its truly from a humanitarian angle then I was wrong for jumping to conclusions.

I didn't know the Mariel Bay exodus is considered derogatory to Spanish speaking people. Of course, Wikipedia is not the most reliable source, but here's what it has to say about the event:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mariel_boatlift

Notice it says that it originally came about because of a severe economic downturn in Cuba, and was organized by Cuban-Americans. The prisoners and mental health patients were salted into the migrants by Fidel Castro, but the majority were economic migrants. To that degree, I don't know that it is such a bad analogy after all. As usual, when there are substantial migrations from one area to another, there is always going to be some bad with the majority of decent people.

My concern is two-fold: how to prepare and render assistance to the influx, and also what is the role of the banks/financial institutions in this and how can we end such events. What has been done to Puerto Rico is beyond cruel. It's similar in scope, if not in size, to what's been done to Greece. I watched an interesting interview yesterday on YouTube about how the financial hucksters have been doing such things to gain hard assets, when the money they lent was created out of thin air. But that's for another thread.

Yes it did, and I was living in Lauderdale and working in Miami at that time and I recall all the confusion and horror stories, etc. But I think there were more decent people in the boatlift, just that the criminals got more attention because they wreaked more havoc.

And no doubt we will get some criminals from Puerto Rico as well, but at least they'll be "our" criminals.

Sorry but the comparison to what's going on in Puerto Rico and trying to compare it to the Mariel boat lift is beyond absurd. Growing up during Mariel in Miami we basically had 125,000 Cubans with no documentation arrive in Miami within 6 months some of which were mentally ill or criminals.
Even if we had 125,000 Puerto Ricans arrive in Florida within 6 months it will be a orderly process and nothing compared to a sudden immigration wave.

I hope you are right and I am wrong. Did you even read the article posted at the top of this thread? If it gets bad enough there will be a lot more people leaving PR than 125,000 and who could blame them? It's not all that difficult to get here from there, it's only the price of plane ticket. It's just a matter of how bad it will get in what amount of time.

I am wondering about the impact on Central Florida and if it wouldn't be a good idea to at least have some sort of plan in place, just in case. Time will tell.

There won't be any plan. People will move here with no jobs, on welfare. Normal people here get fed up and leave. Whole region becomes a mess like Osceola County.

You're probably right. Florida has been good at hurricane preparedness, but that's about it.

There is probably some truth to this, definitely.
