Hello,

I am a homeschooling mom and as such we are researching Miami. We need to make a typical Floridian food. I have no idea what this is. I can't find any info online. Floridian not Cuban food. When you think of New York, you think of hotdogs, knishes, pizza... What food do you think of when you think of Florida? I can only think of oranges. I am not trying to be funny. Please assist me with my ignorance. Thanks much.

Citrus, Avocados, coconuts, sugarcane, those kind of things that are grown in Florida. I know of Floribbean cuisine, which blends Latin flavors, Caribbean dishes, and Southern cooking techniques together.

I guess you should research the tribes that lived in florida. I think that show Bizarre Foods on Travel channel did an episode about them. Yeah it was something along the lines of alligator barbeque like winterfront said i think.

Lots of local seafood specialties, like stone crab claws, grouper, conch, mangrove snapper and yes, alligator. I know you said not Cuban, but Cuban food is very common and a regular part of the Miami food scene.

I recommend reading Cross Creek Cookery by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. It's a wonderful cookbook full of early Florida recipes along with great writing. She has recipes for squirrel, gator, bear, hearts of palm and much more as well as more standard fare. It's one of my favorite books. You should visit her property if you're ever in that area. Great homeschool field trip.
