When I retire next year, my wife and I will probably move tomy condo in St. Pete. I currently have a valid New York drivers license with nopoints, etc. Plus, about 18 years ago, I had a Florida state license which Itraded in when I moved back to NYC. My question is, what do I have to do toswitch my current valid NY license over to a Florida one. Last time, all I hadto do was show proof of address and pass an eye exam (and pay a fee). Have things changed sincethen? Thanks very much for your time.

you ever google search questions like this - perhaps visiting Florida DMV's website - possibly a FAQ section?

I think that you have 30 days, after becoming a resident, to get your Florida license.

From the Florida DMV Website:

If you are moving to Florida, the state's law requires that you register a vehicle within 10 days after engaging in an occupation in Florida or enter a child in a Florida school. You need to first obtain a Florida drivers license. Next you need to obtain auto insurance from a company licensed in Florida. Many auto insurance companies licensed in Florida provide online services. At the DMV you'll also need your original out-of-state title and VIN verification.
When you are issued a motor vehicle registration you will receive a license plate, vehicle registration certificate, and validation decal.

All we had to do was an eye test and surrender our valid Virginia licences. Our Florida licence is good for 12 years!

Gotta love that. If you get in line at Driver Services right now, your number might get called before the license expires!

(maybe)

Much more than that needed since 2010 when Florida started issuing the Real ID driver's license. Lots of people wait in line without all the proper proofs of residency, name change, etc. and have to go home and get them.........I had to and I have been here since 1976. I went in to just have the eye glass requirement for driving changed after I had lens replacement and don't need glasses. I was told I needed 2 proofs of residency(things like mail to you here, bank account, mortgage, lease, etc. ). You will need birth certificates and your wife may need a marriage license to prove she is the same person as the one on the birth certificate. Being a long time resident I was able to use my passport since all of that is checked when you get that.

Check the web site for what you will need, what tests will be required-eye test, signs, etc. Make an appointment with the DMV to avoid the long lines .

Definately read the web site for documentation they want. We had all the documentation they requested with us. And it was relatively painless, no written test or driving test, just a license from another state.

This explains why Florida is notorious for bad drivers.

If your state has a license that complies with Real ID, you need the license and two pieces of mail showing your new address in YOUR NAME. Not the husband's or wife's name, your name. That does it. It took us maybe 30 minutes in Charlotte County.

If not, then the birth certificate, etc.
