Pretty common. I had them in both my East and West Coast homes and had several neighbors that had them also. I got rid of them in both cases however because they were really messy.

They are actually plants, not trees. I am in Sarasota and they grow prolifically in my yard, I love those little bananas! My dad who lived in Tampa had a HUGE grove of them, the really tall ones.

With the hundreds of plants and trees that you can grow in Florida, Banana should be at the bottom or not on your list.

We live in western Oregon. Right now it is 36 degrees and it will likely get down to 20 or below. Last year it got down to 10 degrees. We have a 10 ft tall banana plant. It does NOT produce bananas but it is beautiful and we love it! My DW takes very good care of it, and yet I am still amazed that it survives, maybe even thrives! (not like Florida though!)

Banana trees everywhere around here, especially along canals, etc. Theres areas where entire streets and canals are covered in them.

I wouldn’t be surprised if many Latin Americans living in S. Fla. have banana and plantain tress in their yards

Banana plants are common in Florida, but I am guessing most folks grow them in back yards. For front yards you are more likely to see travelers palms, white bird-of-paradise or the shorter non-edible red leaf banana than the tall clump forming space hogging and sometimes rangy edible bananas.
