Hello!

My husband and I are near retirement but our son will be graduating from college by the time we move out of Oregon which will be in 2-3 years. We are open to any area in Florida.

Anyway, we are now researching where to move to that has warm climate nearly year-round, good job prospects (yes, he's going to live at home because he's smart enough to know he needs to save money first), decent variety restaurants/markets, and friendly neighbors who aren't going to freak out because we are strangers. Most important is the ability for the child to find a job. He's going for an economics degree.

We are originally from NYC where a lot of our friends were born somewhere else - it was a lovely way to grow up! I would be nice to have a bit of that too.

Thank you for any help!

I love it here but honestly Florida lacks quality ENTRY-level jobs. They can still be found though. Houston career wise would be the better choice and has a similar climate. You could also add Dallas and Austin, but Houston has the more similar climate to Florida. Economics by itself is unfortunately one of the worst business majors in general.

He needs internships and work experience. Degree is a box checker now like a high school diploma 40 years ago. It wont get you a job. Employers want to see direct applicable work experience. Does he want to be an economist? That means more schooling, preferably a PHD if he wants to work in government or a think tank/policy shop. Banking? Real estate? Insurance? Corporate Finance? He needs internships.

The college/university should be providing career guidance during school and after graduation. What advice give they provide your child to pick that major? Those should be the jobs to look at P/T, internship etc.
Good luck

If you are going to come to Florida, I would look into the Jacksonville area. Its the least tourism-centric city and has a decent insurance and finance job market. Also coming from a climate with cold weather, you may appreciate the slight seasonal nature here. It actually gets below freezing some nights, and can be cooler in the day in the winter(like northern late fall/early spring). I came from the Northeast, and after living in Houston for 4 years, I appreciate the weather in Jax a lot. Even though on paper they are similar climate-wise, Jax just feels more comfortable.. probably the ocean breeze. Even in the dead of summer, I feel like its comfortable in the early evening to early morning. In Houston in the dead of summer it was still 90+ well after nightfall and very humid!

The most successful kids pound the pavement and hussle. It's a competitive world. Use the alumni network. Send letters. Ask to meet for informational interviews. Network. Network. Network.

You can't just assume the career fairs will plug you into jobs. More often than not, you get that first job by networking yourself.

It has been said many times, it isn't what you know it is who you know.

Yeah, Economics is not what I recommended but it's better than History which is what he loves. I'm pushing programming as a minor if nothing else!

Texas is a possibility also but we have never lived land-locked, so to speak. We much prefer to be within a hour of the ocean. Also, family is still in NY.

Whatever happens, we don't want to move him where it's near impossible to find work. We're exploring all - including VA. OR he stays here and we travel! LOL

Check some of the online jobs companies and see what they have and what degrees, etc are best to have and salaries and the number of openings.
