To get to a point where tropical palms grow you need to head to south Florida. Sarasota south will have tropical vegatation.

You'll learn north florida and south florida have nothing in common except being under the same state jurisdiction, even more so than nocal/socal... the suggestions here are good... but "GOOD" public transportation is a misnomer for Florida, it doesn't exist. They might have some public transportation though
Other places will be much less spread out. You are pretty much living in Milton, AL.
If you are going to live in Florida you might as well get the "real deal" which is about Orlando and south on the coasts.

My mom doesn't drive either and she has found her way using the Scat bus here in Sarasota. They are not as convenient as compared to what we were use to up North but she does manage ok.
