I am contemplating a move to the Fort Myers/Sarasota/Venice area next year. I work from home as a medical transcriptionist and I want to retire or at least work part time in the not too distant future. Can anyone recommend any reasonable safe retirement areas where I could rent at first to make sure I really like the area before trying to buy a home? I would like to be not further than 20-30 minutes from the Gulf. And I am looking for a retirement community where they have a clubhouse and various activities. Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi There! You'd probably get more responses if you posted in the Sarasota/Bradenton subcategory.

When you say retirement community are you saying a 55+ community? or a community that just has more retires? I've heard positive things about La Casa in North Port. Some other ideas are Venetian Falls in Venice; Siesta Harbor, which as deeded beach access; Strathmore Riverside in Sarasota; Southgate Village Green in Sarasota; Foxwood in Englewood has gotten pretty good reviews as well. Were you interested in a mobile, condo, villa or home?

Good luck with it and hopefully this gets you started!

Hi SoFlGal,

Thank you for your response and the info on the different properties. I think I would prefer a 55+ community that offers retirees activities. I will have to rent at first (unless I am able to sell a house I own in Tallahassee) and then I would like to try to buy a villa or small home depending on prices.

BTW, where in South Florida do you live? I lived in West Palm Beach for quite a while, actually in the Wellington area.

Thanks again.

I live in North Port, which is southern Sarasota county. I was born and raised in the area and can answer most questions you might have regarding Sarasota or Charlotte counties. Most of the communities I listed are in the in Sarasota county. I don't do rentals but hopefully I can get you going in the right direction.

Good luck with your search
