A whole generation of people have lived with an exposed trash can. It would seem that every new house would have a plan for an integrated trash can. My first house with this was built in 1992, so there is no excuse for it not being a part of new housing.
Don't generate much trash either...
I also compost most my vegetable & egg waste.
I have a built-in 13 gallon trash cabinet (came with the house)...
by the DW, 2 feet from the sink, 6 feet diagonally from the stove (4.5 ft when opened).
Pretty ideal actually...
for the location of it, easy to use...
minimal mess.
