I'm bumping up this 6+ year old thread because I've been thinking about chicken a lot the last few days (due to the chicken sandwich wars). My choices:
Fried chicken:
*Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken - has only started to become a chain in recent years, and has only about 30 locations nationally as of this writing, but is still expanding. Various articles have identified Gus's as having some of the best fried chicken in the country. I agree.
*Popeyes
*Bojangles
*Church's
I haven't had Nashville hot chicken from enough places (only once from Hattie B's) to comment, but I liked Hattie B's quite a bit. From what I've read, various, other Nashville hot chicken places are even better.
Grilled chicken:
*Nando's Peri-Peri (aka Nando's)
Incidentally, I don't consider places that do not sell bone-in, full pieces of chicken (i.e. places like Chick-Fil-A, Zaxby's, Raising Cane's, Buffalo Wild Wings, etc.) to be "real" chicken restaurants.
My favorite is KFC, but to be fair I've only eaten at Chick-fil-A, and none of the other places listed. We'd considered trying Popeye's over in Idaho, but before we could get there the place went out of business. I'm open to try any of the other chicken places, and then I may reevaluate my favorite chicken, but for now it's KFC all the way.
Among real chicken places Bojangles, followed by KFC and their Original Recipe. In terms of chicken sandwich places..... I like Zaxby's variety better than Chick Fi-la... plus its alot less crowded.
Other chains in the UK include Nandos, Slim Chickens, Wingstop, Jollibee etc as well as a number of more localised chains such as Morleys and smaller upmarket chains or independents such as Absurd Bird. The most popular chicken chain in the UK is without doubt Nandos.
Around here, it is only KFC or Popeyes, & out of those two, I prefer Popeyes. I love chicken, & would try the others on the lsit if I see them, on my travels.
Most of the others are varying degrees of passable. None are world-beating great, though. KFC stores usually have a cleanliness problem, so I have tended to avoid them.
Tried Gus's in Memphis, which was extremely good. Didn't realize they had become a chain. If their chain chicken is as good as the original, it'll blow the competition away.
