We bought a new brand of yogurt this evening and when I looked at the ingredient list I saw it contains TILAPIA. WHAT - fish in my yogurt? It turns-out that tilapia is used for the gelatin component to keep the product Kosher. BTW - it tastes great and I never considered tilapia to be a proper food fish anyway, so why not reduce it to gelatin.

It's quite common I believe. The cartilage/bones of fish is turned into gelatine ( as well as beef bones and other animals) .

Algae is I believe also very commonly used in Europe. I went to school with a girl whose Father's "Empire" ( and her Family was very wealthy indeed) was Algae for the productions of not only beauty products but also Yoghurts.

It's what's used in kosher/halal marshmallows as well. Very expensive compared to conventional marshmallows. Thankfully I don't care for them anyways, but I did buy them as gifts for the daughters of our Muslim nanny. They love them.
