This year, we somehow managed to get Passover foods at ninety percent off. So, we're set for Hearts of palm, Matzo Farfel, Matzo Meal, Matzos.... I used to divine how good a year it was going to be, by how many jars of Matzo Ball Soup we could find, and at how deep a discount. We'd hit every Kroger in town. The year we got 22 jars, at seventy eight percent off turned out to be very sweet for us. But the kids are making their own 12-grain Vegan Matzoh Balls, now (as in I've got a freezer-full), so somebody else can have the mazel off that particular markdown, now.
And we're putting up our own tomato sauce, now. But I used to squirrel away any tomato products like salsa, pasta sauce... in case of hard times.
And I always look for deals on Blackeyed Peas, Dark Red Kidney Beans, and Black Beans. The first two, I carry when I travel (an easy, high-fiber/low-glycemic-load meal for under a Dollar, when you're alone at an hotel). And black beans are the highest in beneficial phytochemicals (and don't keep very well, dried), so, they're good to have on hand.
Just this week, I picked up several large tins of tea from Ceylon, at Ross. Six Dollars, and it's on Amazon for $16.25. Tea is one of those things that would have barter value for many years, if things got bad. And anyway, it's something we use regularly.
This day of fast info via the internet will save money for all of us if we use it. I have a folder on the bookmarks toolbar just for food. Every store we shop at is close by without driving all over town. Can hit 5 on a short trip out. Being informed is the best defense on rising prices. We know when a sale goes off and a new one starts. We signed up for notifications to remind us of the new ads so we can print lists before leaving home for each store. Cuts impulse buying which is expensive.
Mostly chicken legs and thighs. I also like to stock up on chicken wings to make Buffalo wings for parties or sometimes just for us..
When ham goes on sale we buy two of them and when we have our meat sale, three times a year we stock up on steak, and pork. I guess the other thing is soups. I make my own soups most of the time, but I do like to keep cans for the Spoiled brat at lunch.
Anything that's meat and not vegetables. If there are T-bone steaks, or Lamb chops, cutlets, racks, Lamb rump steaks and the like on special, I'll buy up and in the freezer they go.
They're "shelf stable" for many months &
are currently on sale at one of the nearby grocery stores, 3 boxes
(3 pouch, 6-piece size) for $5. That's $1.66 each box
The other grocery store in town charges $3+ for a single box of them-
I'm sure not gonna' buy those there !
Also, paper products (tissues, napkins, paper towels, toilet paper, feminine hygiene).
Cleaning staples such as hydrogen peroxide, sponges, etc.
I've been stocking up on haddock fillets @ $6.98 a pound. Regular price for only 10 OZ is more than that. I've really missed the Boston Butt roasts on sale this summer @ 99¢ a LB.
