After having an In-N-Out burger again after many years, and being relegated to the East Coast for a long time in between, I had a chance to have one again last night. They really are quite similar with one major exception:
In-N-Out toasts the inside of the buns, probably with a little butter or margarine applied beforehand. It makes the experience(taste) much better, and the buns hold together longer.
+1 to In-N-Out. Now that I have tasted both in a closer time frame, I have to give my vote to In-N-Out.

I love them both, but Five Guys burgers and fries portion sizes are too large! I have to get the "mini-burger" when I am at Five Guys.
I have to get the small hamburger. The regular hamburger is way too messy with two beef patties. I tried to eat one and ended-up wearing the thing so I tossed it. I do love the bag-o-fries - it's enough for three of us to share.

very interesting: we still haven't tried 5 guys, but our son in law, in Florida agrees with you. We don't have in&Out here of course, but do have 5 guys. We have to break down and see for ourselves one of these days.
Five Guys has recently opened a couple of locations here in the Toronto area.
My wife and I went in for a look and walked right out again, when we figured out that two burgers, with fires and pop, were going to add up to about Twenty Eight Dollars, plus food tax. That was WAY too much, for ANY hamburger place to charge. Especially when the same order at other places here would be half or two thirds of that amount of money.
We went to Harvey's, which is a Canadian chain that has been in business here since 1959. Two burgers, two orders of fries and large drinks comes to about $14.
It's pretty standard for restaurants to toast the bread for burgers or sandwiches for the very reason that un-toasted bread falls apart easily. When we make burgers at home we toast the buns. It just works better.
