I worked in the Wise Potato Chip (Borden subsidiary) plant for eighteen years. In the late Seventies, Wise experimented with an "artificial" potato chip they called "Stackables"; they had the deeper color and somewhat more brittle texture which was Wise' "signature", but never caught on. The project was abandoned after a few months.
Wise >>> Lays, so thank you for helping bring me my favorite chips.
To think about the mediocrity that is Lay's or Pringles when there are so many excellent regional and local makers around is odd especially considering the premium paid.
I like them both. There is something appealing about pringles shape and strange crunchy soft texture. And lays is has a crisp light salty-potstoey-ness. The kettle-cooked lays are different, but they are not as good as other kettle cooked brands.
I do try to skip both lays and pringles unless I am on a plane or trapped at the airport.
I did have chips fried in duck fat and that was another level of yummy!
I prefer the taste of Lays. I really wanted to like Pringles because I think they are clever, but to me Pringles compared to Lays is like a piece of chicken compared to a chicken Mcnugget.
I like both. Lay's are better REAL potato chips. But Pringles are good for something different. I actually think I like Munchos better than Pringles, though.
