The Obama administration is cracking down on artificial trans fats, calling them a threat to public health. The FDA said today it will require food companies to phase out the use of artificial trans fats almost entirely. Consumers aren't likely to notice much of a difference, but the administration says the move will reduce coronary heart disease and prevent thousands of fatal heart attacks every year.

I knew it wouldn't take long to this to hit the foods thread. Now, we are going to be told no more pop corn for starters plus lots of other things. So we may not have a heart attact and we can live to be 100 plus. Well, we are also being told SS and Medi care on going broke. Let's eat only kale, live forever and let the government support us, what about this makes no sence? Of course living off the government when we have no money left means they are going to control our lives even more....For heavens sake, let us decide for ourselves what we do and do not want to eat. Let us decide if we want to live to be 100 or enjoy the years we have.

I, personally, would like to see more products that are not hydrogenated and trans fats products that
list/label which oils are used. There are various oils and products that advertise that they are a
healthier alternative however they are not true. Since heart disease runs in my family, I want
to be able and have a choice of what to buy. Just like the current issue of where our food comes
from (there are several debates on City Data alone on this subject).

Trans fat: Avoid this cholesterol double whammy - Mayo Clinic

Yes, people should have the right to eat what they want, but it seems that these mega food companies
take the cheapest short cut they can whereas for a few cents more you can get a healthier product.

It is still not up to the government to decide what we can and can not do with our bodies. As for choleteraol, some of the more more recent studies are indicatint it might not be the killer it was thought to be.

For those who want to cut back on anything, eat what they think is healther foods, do whatever they can to add to their years on earth, they certainly should, and if labeling helps us understand what we are eating, I am all for it. I am just not in favor in the government getting involved.

BTW, do you have any idea when the article that you are referring to was written? I ask because one oil they recommend avoiding is coconut oil. Right now there is a trend to use more coconut oil. Do you remember when we were told to avoid eggs and I am sure way before your time we were told to make sure and drink a quart of milk a day.

First it's incandescent light bulbs, now it's Crisco ... Damn! Get Big Brother out of my house!

The FDA should try making a batch of chocolate chip cookies with lard before putting any kind of trans fat ban into place (and don't tell me to use butter - it completely changes the texture of the cookie). Blech.

The problem with this is that many processed foods have the fats replaced with palm oil which is destructive towards the rainforests. I'm not all that crazy about the mouthfeel palm oil gives to foods either... I could tell the difference with nutty bars for example and it was negative... not that I support using trans fats. If the 'rich' want to make a difference they should be buying up rainforest in these countries where the people go and cut it all down for less than stellar reasons such as farming and palm oil, etc.

In the meantime I use butter at home which is superior for cookies when not overbaked... I find most people at work use crisco and then bake the cookies until they are rock hard.. no thanks. Everyone loves my cookies.

Oh, I'm sure your cookies are delicious, but the texutre is a matter of preference. I don't like soft chocolate chip cookies - I want them to be crunchy. Butter makes them soft; therefore, I don't want to use butter in my chocolate chip cookies.

It's not a hard concept to wrap your head around.

Pie crusts. I use a 2 to 1 ratio of butter and crisco. Butter tastes better but a small amount of crisco keeps the crust flaky.

Are they going to put Crisco out of business? Well, I suppose I could save the grease from bacon, get it cold in the fridge, and use that. lol Hmmn. Bacon tasting pie crusts?????? Could probably clean up with that one.

They've already gotten rid of the trans fats in crisco.. they use a combination of liquid soybean oil and fully hydrogenated palm oil.. when you fully hydrogenate a fat the trans fats are gone... it makes it quite hard so they mix it with a liquid oil.. problem solved.

Butter Flavor Vegetable Shortening - Crisco

The laggards only still use it to save a penny or two per container. Grocery store cake frostings are the biggest offender... again I love making my own frosting with butter, cocoa powder, and milk... yummm...

Re-read my original post but.....
The Mayo Clinic continually updates their information. As for cholesterol, ask any cardiologist which
types of fats are better for you than others. Provided a link from John Hopkin's (one of the top ten
hospitals in the US).
As for coconut oil, yes, it is a current trend but if you talk to any heart specialist they would tell
any of their patients exactly the same thing as in the Hopkin's link - avoid it.

btw: as far "way before my time" I remember a lot of things;
cigarettes were't bad
formula was better than breast milk
sugar was "food energy"
DDT wasn't harmful
Drinking beer or wine while pregnant was ok

All I said was that I would like all the information about what I am eating (label with ingredients) so I can make my own personal decision and you can make yours.
