The 5 pound grilled cheese challenge at The Melt in Cleveland. It has 13 different types of cheeses, 3 slices of bread as well as their hand cut fries and delicious slaw.
Now, we went into this challenge knowing we couldn't finish it but it was fun and entertaining. Plus their food is delicious, and doing the challenge is the only way to sample all 13 cheeses at the same meal.
We saw this challenge on Travel Channel's Man Vs Food and thought it looked like fun.
Bonus: we loved the food so much that we take a detour to The Melt any time we are near the Cleveland area.
MY DH did at one of those chain steak houses. It was 10 burger patties on a bun with 10 slices of cheese, plus 1 pound of fries and coleslaw He got through 8 patties, handful of fries, one bite coleslaw. He would have completed the challenge if he hadn't had 2 large beers before hand. then you know what happened next in the bathroom. He did another at Shula's steak house in NYC. He had to finish a 48 oz. steak which he did.
An eating challenge? I was in a chili cookoff one time, but that doesn't sound like what you meant.
Have you ever seen Man Vs Food on the Travel channel? Of course food challenges were around long before that show, it just popularized them.
The first food challenge I ever saw was in 1993 in Amarillo Texas at The Big Texan. You had to eat a 72 ounce steak, baked potato, salad and roll in an hour and you got it free. If you failed the challenge you had to pay $39.99 for the meal.
Win or lose, your photo was taken. It was either posted on the winner's display ("Survived!") or the loser's display ("Tried and Died") for all the customers to see.
Our server was a skinny little guy in his 60's and he had survived the challenge 8 times and was getting ready to attempt his 9th.
