I saw this amusing article about a newspaper that issued a correction for calling a hot dog a sandwich 10 times since 1887.

My initial reaction was "of course a hot dog is a sandwich." However, everyone doesn't share my opinion.

Here's the article: https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/...-no/498542001/

So where do you come down on this burning topic of national importance? Do you consider a hot dog to be a sandwich?

Yes, to me, a sandwich is some kind of filling between breads, so a hot dog meets that requirement.

I realize that a sandwich consists of "something" (meat, cheese, etc.) inserted into bread. Logically a hot dog fits this definition. Yet, if someone offered me a sandwich and then proceeded to give me a hot dog, I would be dumbfounded. So I have to say no, a hot dog is not a sandwich.

I consider it a sandwich - it's in a bun. A split bun, hamburger or hotdog, is the basis of a sandwich, just like two slices of bread. The 4th Earl of Sandwich wanted to eat without leaving the gaming table so he was served his meat between two pieces of bread (his hands didn't get soiled, and neither did the cards). And so the sandwich was born. Same concept happening with a tube of meat served nestled into bread.

I follow the same logic. Now an "open face sandwich" - say roast beef and gravy served over a slice of bread - regardless of what you call it, you have to eat it with a fork, or else wear it. The Earl, I think, would have been OK with a hot dog, but that open face sandwich would probably go back to the kitchen.

Just IMHO.

If you take the hot dog out of the bun, it is still a hot dog. Thus, not a sandwich.

Whenever I order a hot dog I get a wiener on a bun. That's what I want: consistency.

Can't a hot dog just be a hot dog? In a class all its own.
I go to places that have menus but hot dogs (if they had them) are not listed under sandwiches, certainly not the same way a BLT is.

I don't really consider sausages on buns to be sandwiches. Ditto gyros, quesadillas, burritos, bierocks, etc., even though they are all some type of filling encased in some way or another by some type of bread.
