I doubt that many people are actually doing this meal. It is a government cost comparison exercise where they price the exact same stuff year after year, starting, what?, 30 or 40 years ago? A basic exercise to see how much costs have gone up. You have to use the exact same meal every year to compare apples to apples.
I suspect if you were preparing a meal for the homeless, that is what you would serve and what you would budget. Nobody gets seconds and nobody gets more than one slice of turkey. Green beans would come out of a gallon can instead of fresh and a 79 cent fresh veggie tray, just one, would be enough because nobody would want any.
We just aren't turkey people... I buy a turkey when I have a crowd coming and don't want to bother much with cooking. What we're having for Thanksgiving dinner is:
Charcuterie plate of thinly sliced meats, gooey, stinky brie, blue cheese, assorted garlic-stuffed olives, variety of crackers, pickles, mustards, fruit preserves, crunchy french bread, sliced.
Pork shoulder (rubbed with spices, seared, sliced onions added, deglazed with beer), gravy from the drippings, mashed potatoes, yams with brown sugar/walnut/spices topping, green beans, corn, corn bread-sage-sausage stuffing, and rolls.
2 pumpkin pies, 2 apple pies, 2 chocolate mousse pies, 2 cheesecakes (1 topped with cherries, 1 topped with sliced almonds), whipped cream for the top of the pumpkin and mousse pies.
Malbec, chardonnay, and homemade Irish creme for alcohol... and Turkish coffee (with rose water) for those who don't drink. Also great while sharing a sheesha later on. :P
For Christmas, we do apps. ALL the gluttonous snacks we love and just pop them in and out of the oven, as needed. A friend of mine orders probably $200 worth of sushi and Chinese food and they snack on it but I love to cook so that would really take the fun out of the day, for me. lol
Hmmm, organic free range heritage turkey, $4.50/lb. @ 20 pounds.
lol.....90.00 turkey ive sold a few of those this year.....
