Another question related to my current phase of trying (again) to lose weight.

We've discovered air popped popcorn. It's good BUT not great without the butter. But we can deal with that and try to forget it. HOWEVER, we cannot deal with not having any salt on this stuff. I have popcorn salt, but not unexpectedly, it doesn't stick at all.

How do I get at least SOME salt to stick to this stuff without bumping up the calories and oil? Or is it a lost cause?

I use a coconut oil spray. It's a much lighter delivery system than just pouring butter all over and easier to control for more even coverage.

Hmmm, without adding any butter or oil (i.e. calories)... you need something with moisture, though. I wonder if you could mist some water onto the popped corn and quickly do your salt shakes so that there's something to do the absorption? I don't know if it'll work -- I'm just thinking out loud.

You take regular salt and put it in a blender/chopper until it's a fine mist then it will stick fine.

Agree with this. Putting salt on dry popcorn in a powdered form helps it stick much better than the salt crystals. Just grind up a batch and keep it in a separate shaker to use whenever you make more popcorn.

Also, when needing such a small amount you can also use just a bit of cooking spray which would have such few calories to not have to worry about it. You only need a spritz or 2 and then toss the popcorn and it will distribute enough of the oil to make the salt adhere. Or, get yourself a spritzer bottle and add olive oil, grapeseed oil or avocado oil and spritz a couple times, toss and then salt. I have even heard the suggestion of spritzing on apple cider vinegar. (never tried that one myself but some have said it is good).

The OP stated that they tried popcorn salt, which is a finely powdered salt.

I spray the popcorn with vegetable oil/Pam and then salt it.

I pop my popcorn in a small amount of vegetable oil, or canola oil so it has some on it after it pops, and the salt sticks. Yeah, not as healthy as just air popped, but better tasting. I guess you could also get that spray butter, and use that, but then again, more calories.

We use a whirley pop popcorn popper, coconut oil, and popcorn salt. Not the healthiest option, but it tastes just like movie theater popcorn.
