I enjoy seafood including shellfish, but I've never had an oyster. I've eaten raw clams about the size of a quarter (coin) drizzled with lemon. I've had steamed muscles and liked those too. So, I'm wondering are oysters all that different? I've seen them eaten on a half shell, raw I think but don't seem to have it in me to try them. Are they swallowed whole or do you chew them? Do they taste much different than other shell fish?

just a variation on mollusks or shellfish

I grew up digging and eating steamer clams....but never had a cherrystone (clam)
mussels ive picked off rocks and boiled ...with butter..

comes down to personal tastes

ive had oysters and shucked thousands at my sisters restaurant years ago..

somehow oysters became popular raw......I like to slurp them once in a while over a beer

my fav bivalves are steamer clams and scallops...

fried steamer clams are one of my all time favs.. along with steamed clams in butter ...I can eat a bushel & a peck!

both oysters and clams are …. well my perspective is they taste like they should

try them both see if you like them...but if you order clams...make sure its WHOLE clams and not just the necks....and don't be fooled by the description of clam tenderloins (its just clam necks)

Mollusks are my favorite sea food. They are tasty, packed with proteins and nutrient without the fish smell.

Oysters form beds where they can fuse into huge clusters in brackish water. They have to be broken apart to get individual oysters. Clams (hard shell) bury in sand/mud individually. After harvest most need to be purged or they can be sandy. My favorite clam is the geoduck (Pacific NW). Most of the oysters I've had raw are from the Gulf coast or eastern seaboard. I tried West Coast oysters when I was in Vancouver, BC and have ordered them online. I was at a DEMA show in NOLA many years ago, a co-worker and I, after several Hurricanes at Pat O'brien's, wound up in the ACME Oyster House downing many dozen's of raw oysters. I say many dozens because neither one of us kept count. Sea scallops are a favorite, but they must be dry packed! My oldest brother was stationed in Pensacola back in the 70's. While visiting I got the chance to harvest bay scallops. I love using bay scallops in Coquilles St. Jacques.

Oysters are stronger than clams for one thing. Oysters can be eaten whole or browned and cut up, just like clams. I prefer Clams. Clams also don't seem to be a chewy.

I've only ever smelled steamed muscled... Normally in a sauna or steam room. Not sure I'd want to eat them.

Kidding aside, oysters are delicious. I like them virtually all ways: raw, steamed, friend, and even the ones with cheese and herbs at Chinese buffets. They are, in fact, just large clams.

By all means, go get a seafood platter that has both clams and oysters at any good local seafood restaurant - IIRC you are in Cali, I would think this would not be hard to find. Ideally go to a seafood smorgasbord, a good one, and you can sample both shell fish prepared in several different ways. I could type on here like I wrote War and Peace, and you would still be better off just trying them yourself, and decide if you like oysters or not.

Yeah, oysters and clams have different tastes, the oysters are in general bigger and have a stronger taste. Some people do eat them raw, but I don't, just not a fan.

Either in the wild or on my plate, it's easy for me to tell the difference just looking at them.

Oysters!!! OMG fried, steamed, raw, broiled, or grilled!

When I lived in South Carolina we would buy them by the bushel in the cluster still covered in pluff mud, take them to a car wash and hose them down, then throw them on the grill with the wet burlap bag on top to steam them open!

OMG with a dash of hot sauce and an ice cold draft beer? Honey hush!

We would stand over a grill for hours eating oysters and drinking beer.
