Our Costco food court is outside due to year round good weather so you never had to go inside and show your card. Guess now people will have to show membership at the order window.
I think it's a good thing. The lines at the food court is getting too long. This will cut it down. They need to enforce the membership entry at the returns entrance.
Sam's club just started checking membership at the entrance too. Good start to cut down at their food court lines.
Two of the Costco's we go to have a self-ordering kiosk now. It seems to have cut down on the long lines. Haven't tried the kiosk yet. It's been awhile since we got anything from the food court there. Maybe I can try it Thursday.
Well, all I am saying is that our Costcos used to, but don't any more. SoCal, for what it's worth.
Sounds about right. Someone I talked to in that area said the same thing. They don't really challenge people who walk in without showing their memberships.
Not sure why they would discourage non-members from using their food court unless it's a loss leader to attract people to the stores.
It's pretty much the textbook definition of a loss leader, so yes, if they allow non members in to use it, they are only engaging in the "loss" side of the equation.

I am not sure how many people go their just for the food, however if it's a loss leader then I can understand why they are limiting it to Costco members.

That's why they sell a foot long hot dog and a drink for $1.50, because members walk in there with 3 things on their list and walk out with 15 items in their cart (Guilty).

I believe they have said they lose money on the Hot Dogs (and $5 Rotisserie Chicken), but will continue to sell them at that price. I think most (all?) of their profits are from Membership fees and they break even on the merchandise they sell.
One of the requirements for them to be able to sell prescription drugs was to make the Pharmacy available to everyone. As noted above, a membership is not required to enter the store.
I don't know how people got in, at all the Costco I have been to, they ask for membership cards at the front door. We sometimes get the hot dog special, Also liked the brisket sandwich, didn't know that was discontinued.
The ones I have been to in California have a walk up counter outside so it was really easy for people to go there. A group of us from work would go there occasionally when we wanted a quick cheap meal. I did have a membership card but they never asked for one outside.
At the first sign of the Zombie Apocalypse, I'm heading to Costco because there are no windows & everyone knows Zombies can't get inside without a membership card.
