I have never heard of anyone else, but both me and my mother are allergic to onions. She has been for about 17 years... me, for about 3 years. She gets violent headaches and will have hallucinations if she eats onions, especially peru onions. She cant eat anything with onion powder, or anything that was cooked near onions.

I will just get a moderate headache. Its bad for us both, because we love onions. I used to eat them on everything. Now my headaches are getting worse when I eat them.

Oh well. I guess I will have to tell them good bye.

Anyone else allergic to them, or have another food allergy to a food that you love?

That would not be considered a food allergy.

A food allergy would give you hives, swelling, trouble breathing, swollen tongue, eyes, hands etc. This would be signs of a more serious anaphylactic reaction.

Sorry.... I guess the doctor was wrong.

Its quite a sensitivity then to cause to much severe pain and mental illusions. Oh, I think she did break out in sweats with certain types of onions.

That's been known to happen.

First question: was he an allergy doctor?

Second question: did he do any kind of test, and if so, what kind?

Third question: do you (or does your mother) carry a prescribed epipen with you in case of exposure to onions?

onions cause me to get migraines. I had to add them to my no no list. My neurologist said his wife can't eat them either as they give her migraines. Though he did say she can eat them if they are cooked.
On a side note: dogs aren't supposed to eat them because they can and do cause seizures in dogs and potential death.

Yeah, dogs aren't supposed to eat chocolate, either. Good thing we don't react to chocolate the way dogs do! I'd be doomed!

There is a definite difference between a true allergy and a sensitivity. As I understand it, only 2% of the adult population has true food allergies, though many more than that claim them. (It's really popular for some weird reason to jump on the "allergy bandwagon", which makes it difficult for those of us who DO carry around an epipen - in my case, not for food, for wasps - to be taken seriously.) Sensitivities are more common.

My best friend is allergic to onions and many other foods that she used to be able to eat. The list is quite long. Yes, they do cause an anaphylatic reaction, and yes, she does carry an epipen.
