I am one of those people that absolutely hates the "S" word..I am a born and raised Southern girl, yet I hate that word as well as the word "folks" but that's a whole 'nother thread...
anyhoo..which do you say?
OMG funny you should start a thread on this! I absolutely have a pet peeve against the word "supper"! The terminology just grates on my nerves for some reason
Dinner sounds so much more sophisticated and just right to me! The only place "supper" sounds normal to me is when describing a supper club or the lords supper.
I really don't believe "supper" is exclusively southern, as it is used in the midwest too. I don't think I ever heard people use it when I lived in CA.
When we moved for a short while to Windsor, Ont., we found that lunch=dinner, and dinner=supper. Just another 'weirdness' thing which they seemed to have a lot of over there. They also had ketchup flavored chips, and there was a convenience store called "Mac's" but everyone referred to it as "Mac's Milk". We only lived there for about (or should I say, a-BOOT) a year. I've never been back, and doubt that I ever will be.
I'm originally from Iowa. For some reason, where I'm from, many people (especially old people) use "dinner" interchangably with the word "lunch". I think this is stupid, but what can you do? Anyway, I actually never use dinner anymore because it can be confusing depending who I am talking to. I say:
I don't use "supper"; it's always "dinner" for me. I have heard some people use "dinner" to mean lunch and "supper" to mean "dinner", though. I think I got that right, anyway. Now I'm confusing myself lol...
"The Last Supper" just wouldn't seem right if it were called "The Last Dinner"
To me
Dinner = lunch, only bigger, and later, a bit more formal, as in having a Sunday dinner.
Supper= the evening meal.
Amen. Good enough for the Master, good enough for me.
