Lambertville Station has a nice game menu. Have tried many different animals from it:
Alligator
Rattle Snake
Wild Boar
Ostrich
Buffalo
Kangaroo
Venison (numerous times and places)
Caribou
Elk
And Chicken
Machinist - is that restaurant you mention: Lambertville Restaurants | The Inn at Lambertville Station - The Lambertville Station Restaurant (broken link) ?
How is the quality? Good value?
hmmm, just checked out the menu, don't see much in the way of wild game? Must be not looking at right place?
I have had alligator in Florida, and I have ate frog's legs at my Grandparent's restaurant when I was a child. I have never had snake. I am not sure if I would eat it if I had the opportunity. I remember that the gator didn't taste like much of anything. But I loved the frog's legs. They were tasty. Turtle I don't think I would eat either. Funny, I took my kids fishing in a creek last weekend and I caught a really big turtle. My son was like, Mom lets take that home and cook it. I let it go. I just wouldn't feel right killing a poor little turtle.
Absolutely, have eaten all of those along with squirrel, rabbit, possum, groundhog, (anybody want to go groundhog hunting with me on February 1, shoot that sucker before he sees his shadow),goat, bear, pheasant, grouse, quail, wild turkey and just about any kind of seafood you can think of, as long as it don't try to eat me first....
About the only thing I don't think I can bring myself to try are exotic insects and the like. Birds' nest soup might be a bit of a stretch for me, too.
As Cajun fare, I have had crawdads and frog legs and alligator -- each is fairly tasty, and not really what I thought it'd taste like. Alligator is actually mildly 'fishy.'
I really like game quite a bit, but with no hunters left in the family, rarely have anything like duck, or dove, or venison. I tried elk, once, and bear. My Grandmother used to cook what my father brought in from hunting, and I loved the venison hash she used to make for us. In the summer, she'd fix scrambled eggs with roe, too, when we stayed at the beach, and I don't think I've had that in years, either.
The nice little turtle doesn't bother anybody. They (like squirrels) aren't even big enough to make a meal out of.
Why would anyone even want to eat them?
It's not like cattle, which can feed many, or even poultry, which can also feed many.
Just the trouble of trying to get it out of it's shell seems...well, whatever. To each his own.
It is indeed a cultural thing, I understand that. But turtles, squirrels and rabbits just seems a bit much, to me anyway.
Then again, in India the idea of eating cattle is outrageous so, to each his own.
