Hi everyone. I enjoy sugary drinks greatly, but the past 2 months, I've only had them once in a while. I'd like to quit for good however
Does anyone have any recommendations as a replacement? I just drink plain water all the time and I'm getting so bored of it. I sometimes add lemon but it still doesn't help. I find myself craving sugary drinks. However, I know they are bad for the health, teeth, etc.
The average American drinks 53 gallons of soda a year. If it's regular soda, that comes to about 49 pounds of sugar. Soda is loaded with caffeine, high-fructose corn syrup and calories. In addition to contributing to weight gain, soda increases your risk of diabetes, bone weakening and tooth decay. Break your addiction to soda with this plan. I became allergic to sugary soft drinks 32 years ago and quit. It's just water and black coffee or tea for me. I don't crave it at all. I did the first few weeks, but it goes away. Good luck!
Sometimes I'll want a sweet drink too. We usually keep a couple packets of Crystal Light Pure (or a store brand when we find it). It's sweetened with Stevia.
I also buy flavored liquid stevia drops. Mostly I use them in coffee or tea but it could add a bit of sweetness to a glass of water. It isn't an intense flavoring though. I also like really flavorful herb tea made into iced tea (orange spice, raspberry, peppermint, etc)
When I want something fizzy I'll go for club soda or seltzer with lemon or lime. And if I absolutely positively have to have something that is like a soda pop, I'll get a 6 pack of Zevia soda.
Some years ago, I switched to Diet coke. It was hard for a while, then after a few months, I found regular coke tasted disgusting to me.
Then years later, I realized I was drinking about 16 diet cokes a day - very unhealthy, so I stopped. Now I drink only water, tea tisanes and iced tea. Once in a while I might have a couple of beers, glass of wine or scotch. Once you commit to a change, you just do it and very soon you do not miss it.
However I do remember a couple of times a week or two after quitting diet coke, seeing and smelling some and literally trembling because I wanted it so badly. Yes it is addictive.
When I was younger, I would consume Coke, Pepsi, 7UP and Dr. Pepper frequently. Probably 3-4 bottles a day. I could start to see the unhealthy effects. I stopped "cold turkey" and for the first few weeks, hated it. I switched to water, coffee, coffee drinks (with 2% milk and the other lower calorie options) and green tea.
After a while, I didn't miss it. I drink one bottle of soda a year now, if that.
Diet drinks are as bad as the full sweet ones. Just stop drinking the soft drinks altogether. After about 6 months, you won't have the cravings. I stopped drinking soft drinks in September 2015 after some time in the hospital. It was hard the firs t6 months, but now I can't imagine drinking a soft drink. Water or iced tea is all I drink. Blood chemistry is now normal, incipient fatty liver is gone, etc. Most of the sugary drinks have high fructose corn syrup in them, which is really bad stuff. HFCS doesn't make you feel full, so you keep drinking the drinks.
