one problem is that a V8 engine is a requirement in order to have an acceptable level of performance for pursuit puposes. in short, unless youre thinking of a fleet of Cadilacs, there arent too many front wheel drive V8s.
The Chevy Impala V6 runs door handle to door handle with the Ford CVPI up to about 129 MPH-----then the 'Wimpala' pulls ahead to its 142 MPH top speed.
If you want, Ill throw in the Elantra GT times which are slightly better than the SE model. Fact of the matter is, most of the cars on the road today run 0-60 times around 8 seconds seconds or less, whereas the last test Car and Driver did, a Michigan Crown Vic Interceptor ran it in 8.7 seconds. The best Ive ever seen a Interceptor run 0-60 was 7.8 seconds or something like that, which is a 0-60 time that most econoboxes run. A Toyota Highlander can smoke a Crown Vic Interceptor, thats just wrong. So dont argue unless youre up on your cars, which its apparent youre not. V8 does not = speed anymore. There are LOTS of 4 holers thatll outrun even big V8s, dont kid yourself.
Christ, dude. your stats mean absolutely nothing to me. btw, i am a LEO and i would rather be in a Crown Vic pursuing a Hyundai than in a Hyundai pursuing a Crown Vic. it has a hundred HP and double the torque. plus it's a rear-wheel drive. a tested half second slower 0-60 time doesnt mean that a Crown Vic isnt going to run down an econobox fairly quickly.

okay, i got it. however, there are other problems associated with front wheel drive. also, a six cylinder is not going to hold up as well to frequent abuse as well as an 8 cylinder. plus the FWD V-6 Impala probably just isnt big or rugged enough to be a mainstay in law enforcement fleets.

You and about 99% of the other patrol LEO's like RWD vehicles as well.
And; looking at things from the repair end-----I, too vastly prefer RWD
BTW: come on out to Arizona; we desperately need more cops of all descriptions!
Whenever I think of police cruisers, for some reason the first image that comes to mind is the "Blues Brothers" in their late 1970s or early 80s Dodge Polara leaving behind a fleet of crashed up Chicago PD cruisers. The old Dodges had the monster 440 V8 if I recall correctly, and although they were an extreme gas guzzler, I don't recall there were too many vehicles that could outrun them on a wide open road. Somehow the new Dodge Charger police cruisers just don't seem to be in the same league as their predecessors, the brawny old Dodge Polara.

The first Blues Brothers movie had a 1974 Dodge Monaco 440 Magnum; according to the storyline, said police car was an x Mt Prospect, Ill squad.
BTW: with the possible exception of the 1969 Dodge Polara (and probably same year Ply Fury) 440 Magnum-------any 2006+ Dodge Charger police package Hemi V8 is faster in both the 1/4 mile and top end vs. any of the old Mopars.
Vehicle technology has progressed that much.
BTW: the 2006+ Dodge Charger SRT-8 (425 net horsepower 6.1L V8) has been officially clocked @ 171 MPH!
