I am looking for a new car, preferably a mustang, but i am on a really tight budget. I want something that will last and have low miles, and i would prefer the v8 because of the power. However i can only afford older models of the GT with the v8 in it, or a little bit newer models with the v6. What would give out more performance, an older GT (probably 91-99 generation) or a little bit newer v6 version (99-2000)?

Both choices will be fairly anemic in terms of sporty cars but I'd go with the GT.

Yup, I'd go with the GT. The V6 was a boat anchor until 2011.

The 99-04 GT are the same (outside of the Cobra and Mach1 versions) in terms of having a 260 HP SOHC 4.6 2-valve modular motor with the "Edge" styling while the pre-99 styled are kind of gutless IMO

Only the 94 to the early 1996 GT's with the old Pushrod 5.0 V-8 respond better to bolt-on mods better then the early 2-valve 4.6 mod motors due also compared to the later 96-98 mod motor mustangs.

So a SN-95 1994-1996 5.0 Mustang GT or a 1999-2004 4.6 "Edge" styled SN-95 GT would be my choice(s)

Avoid the 3.8 V-6 at all costs it is a dog of motor and their is no aftermarket support for them basically it is boat anchor of a motor in the Mustang in all those years 94-04

actually there is aftermarket support for the V6, there are at least two websites that sell performance parts. the essex V6 is underrated by many, and can be made to be a solid performer for the street, and even at the track to a point if you are wanting to go that route.

however since you are on a tight budget, i recommend buying the best GT you can afford to buy.

American Luxury is spot on, any V6 prior to 2011 is nothing to brag about. What about moving up to at least a 2004 or 2005 GT. I just saw a 2004 GT with 85,000 miles for 7,500 and a 2005 with 54,000 miles for 11,000 at cargurus.com

The older fox body Mustangs (pre 94) are sorta modern classics - not good by modern standards but they are more rare and unique IMO.

Yeah but a 87-93 LX Coupe 5.0 in decent condition with a T-5 5-speed manual tranny will fetch as much or more then a 99-04 GT.

People from my Generation will spend in the range of $7K-$10K for a nice well taken care of 1987-1993 LX 5.0 Coupe.

I mean would love to buy a nice condition notchback coupe to build a fun weekend/Nice day car like this

Default What about a 2006?

Thank you for all of your help! i had just found a 2006 v6 for my budget, it has some body damage which is why it is in my budget. i am pretty confident i could fix it, but i want to know if that makes a difference or would it still be best to go with the most recent GT i can afford?

If performance is not a priority then stick to your budget.
