I'm new to South Florida and considering renting a single family house in Pompano Beach. I've read some mixed reviews about the area but not a whole lot that's recent. Any opinions on the area just south west of Atlantic and Federal? I've been told to stay east of Dixie but I'm just interested in getting an impression. Thanks in advance!

That area is far enough east that it's generally fine. The High Ridge, Garden Isles and Cypress Harbor neighborhoods are southwest of the Atlantic/Federal intersection and they're basically an extension of the nice neighborhoods on the north end of Fort Lauderdale such as Imperial Point.

But ... heed all advice to stay east of Dixie. Without getting into the gory details, the areas north and west of the Dixie/Atlantic intersection have serious crime and safety issues -- and that's an understatement.

Horrible--I'd avoid anything in Pompano like the plague.

I wouldn't hesitate to rent there if its temporary or seasonal. If its long term, I'd look elsewhere. The neighborhood is decent and has a good amount of shopping nearby. Its very close to the beach. You can live a fantasy beach life there. If you're in it for the long term or have family, there are much better choices than Pompano.

Pompano is mainly for the old and the young, but not so much for families. It is a great area to vacation or rent a condo if you're a snowbird.

Thank you all for the feedback. I plan on being there only for about a year or so but I appreciate the insight!

Unless you're on the beach; Pompano, by and large, is ghetto trash.

There is a reason why anyone that fits the description of "ghetto hood scum" in Broward county gets the tounge-in-cheek name of "Pompano's finest."

That area should be fine for a year. You really do need to stay east of Dixie.
