we always have a good chuckle driving by those new 20000? sq ft mansions on Captiva.
20,000 s.f is a bit of a stretch. The huge mansions (and there aren't that many) are between 7,000 and 10,000 under air.

However, if you're interested in having a family reunion any time soon, Sea Oats has 9 bedrooms and baths, and it's available for the measly cost of $17,000 a week.

Its probably impolite to discuss a specific home, but I had in mind that one particular outlier in plain view from the street and its mini-me down the road that was being finished off last year right on the road that runs along the beach that dwarfs the regular Captiva mansions...I took another look at it on google maps....I would up my estimate for the big house to 30000!

I actually like the house. Its just the scale that is a bit intimidating.

Oh, you're talking about total square footage? That's different. You should go to Palm Beach if you think that's huge. Some people have compounds with 4 or 5 houses behind the gate. I can think of one person, who calls himself a regular guy & voice of the people.

I mean under air! If you have not been out to the end of the SanCap road in the last year or so it is worth the trip to see this place...you can't miss it. Definitely a Palm Beach scale home.

Sorry, when I lived on Sanibel (and a short time on Captiva) I was disgusted when I began to see the large homes on the beach. They don't fit into the island atmosphere and, for me, ruin the whole ambience of being on a small island. This whole topic is going way off on a tangent, but my attitude has nothing to do with money. I knew some very wealthy residents who lived in small cottages nestled between the trees. I suppose since they pay taxes, they contribute to the community, but even if I won Powerball, I wouldn't want to live in one of them.
