Not where I live.

People that point to the money changers in the temple generally disdain that stuff. I guess it depends on where your proclivities lie.

We need this casino in Fort Myers to bring jobs and attract visitors here. This would surely help no only the local jobs but also the local area to stabalize and quite possibly even rebound the home tragedy in the area. The Forum area is a perfect area for the casino. There's a huge population in the very nearby vicinity that needs jobs the most. Not only that but it's also right in an area that's been hurt the most by the real estate crisis. The other great thing about the location is it's at the northern part of Lee county in an area where there's not that much there. This will create huge opportunity's. It's really a great idea. Two Thumbs Up!

I know this is an old argument but it is also as relevant today as it was in 2011. Sadly enough, too many close-minded, conservative, and moral-thumping people are preventing the Ft. Myers area from recovering economically. Casino gaming, and I mean the mega-resort style, Las Vegas games, entertainment, hotels, shopping, restaurants (i.e. c'mon down Gordon Ramsay, etc.), is JUST what this area NEEDS! Look at the Florida economy; it is based on tourism. When the snowbirds go north, their money goes with them along with many jobs tucked neatly in the trunks of their Crown Vics or sandwiched into cramped motor homes rolling down I-75 at 45 mph. That leaves working-age individuals faced with reduced hours, totally laid off, and businesses struggling to remain intact until November. Disney is a major contributor to the fallacy that gaming will ruin Florida. Well, c'mon people, think. Disney does not want to share $$$ with big casinos. So of course, Disney, Universal Studios, Busch Gardens, etc. are all having temper tantrums over the thought of some Vegas-style resorts springing up and offering a "grown up Disney experience." Not to mention the Seminole tribe, that has long held Florida by the short hairs in regards to offering the only "true casino" operation in the state. But we owe the Native Americans... right?! Well, I love Native Americans and their culture and traditions... but free enterprise is just that. The competition may prompt the Seminoles to "up their game" and transform the Immokalee Vegas-wanna-be casino into something truly exciting, as promised several years ago. What ever happened to the expansion to include big time entertainment venues, shopping, hotel, etc.? Granted, Immokalee is not a tourist magnet. It is a languishing drive from the airport amidst old trailers and acres of cow patties. The area is flanked by citrus farms, famous for its illegals, and not exactly a safe stroll at night. But add a nice luxury resort and free shuttle from RSW, and you may have something there, Seminoles! Now plunk down a big new casino resort, a la Wynn Las Vegas (yes, Steve, I'm talking to you!), in Ft. Myers, a few along beachfront property (with funding from the Mega-Bucks fueled resort giants to improve infrastructure), and now you have something truly wonderful. Add to that a cool amusement park for the kiddies, and already existing stops like SunSplash, Immaginarium, and Zoomers, and you have something for everyone. Yes, people will dump bucks into casino games. Grandma will spend little Billy's birthday cash on a chance at winning a new Mustang convertible on the Progressive Wheel of Fortune slots. But you know what... Grandma can now spend Billy's dough on the FL Lottery scratch-off tickets or betting on a particularly "lucky" Greyhound. So stop being hypocrites! Allow all gaming or allow none. We working-age folks need year round income and a nice boardwalk along the Gulf, brimming with neon, all-you-can-eat buffets, and a Jimmy Buffet Theater (now presenting Lady Gaga in a 4 week exclusive show!), some great shopping and gitchy souvenir shops, and my gosh... I'd forget my yearly sojourn to Las Vegas!!!

You don't mention the increased crime, gambling addictions and lowered worker productivity in surrounding businesses, increased government costs to deal with the above. Some gamblers are degenerate lowlives. Have you ever noticed that slums usually accompany casinos? I would rather appeal to Fortune 500 companies to relocate to our area for jobs, like Hertz has done. That creates more stability. I wonder if you ever watched the movie: "It's a Wonderful Life"? I suppose you would prefer Pottersfield to Bedford Falls.

I certainly hope we don't get casino gambling in Ft Myers! I lived in San Diego County Ca.....and occasionally went to the Pala casino. Instead of being glamorous and exciting.....it is depressing to watch older folks sitting at the slot machines pumping $5 bucks after $5 bucks for hours on end. If you look at the faces....no one is having fun....it is desperation....and depression. (And the stench of cigarette smoke is overwhelming. I would think it would be against the law to allow employees to be exposed to that smoke in their work environment.....you know it will result in health problems for them.

I had the reaction to my visit to Vegas.....we stayed at a hotel on the strip. Walking from one place to another.....we were repeatedly accosted or approached by pimps and prostitutes and guys hawking strip shows.....very unsavory. We certainly don't need that at the Forum or anywhere in Ft Myer.

I am all for promoting family friendly entertainment...but casino gambling NO!

I enjoy the entertainment in and the jaw-dropping beautiful areas around Vegas. That said, NIMBY. I hope it comes to a vote. Unfortunately, though, cheaply done casinos as revenue generators seem to be an inevitable trend.

Nothing wrong with playing the slots for fun...no sin in it..no different that buying a scratch off or a raffle ticket.

I remember everyone being sent a free gift comp to go to Atlantic City..it was fun and funny... people were all walking around with crock pots and free electric tea kettles.. everyone lining up for a free buffet , free room at the Hilton ... those were the days.. and I knew the machines that paid...it was fun .. won more comps guessing the price of a lincoln continental in a Price is Right Game Show that was held at the Show Boat and all the free shows .

Very decent crowd of people and no smoking in the casinos.. they did have a section for smokers . Most of the smokers went to the Borgata which I didn't care for.. the wormy looking chandeliers creeped me out..

A great stream on the waning days of AC pre-casinos: One of Burt Lancaster's last, filmed just after Resorts was opened and before the rest:

Atlantic City (1980) - IMDb

"Yes, it used to be beautiful -- what with the rackets, whoring, guns."
