I agree that taking a long vacation here would probably be best. I have a British ex-pat friend who doesn't like living here but she married an American and has had two kids here. She's always complaining about how different Texas is than England and clearly doesn't like living here. As for politics, most friends I've made here (north Ft. Worth) are moderate-liberal and non-religious. We do exist, but aren't really vocal about it. I can only count on one hand the number of people I personally know that like our President.

Anyway, I think such a drastic move would be very hard on the children, so I personally wouldn't do it. I wish you luck!

We originally thought we'd go for 3 years but feel 5 would be better now as its a big upheaval for just 3 years as s few people pointed out to me in this thread. As our little ones are half American we thought it would be a good experience for them to live in America for a while as they'd see the other half of the family and we'd try and take them travelling a little whenever possible. They'd also play little league and get to see rodeos and the Stockyards which they'd love. We'd make sure we had a house with a pool for them etc. So hopefully for them it would be like a 5 year vacation (but with school!) We are now looking at private schools and at living in Fort Worth so it's more metropolitan.
I guess that makes sense. But I wouldn't even consider living in Forth Worth. The whole city is run down and the suburbs are the blandest places I have ever seen.

Earthisle...

You exemplify the worst stereotypes of Austinites as liberal snobs who look down on the rest of Texas. I'm saying that as a liberal myself. Have you ever actually lived in Fort Worth or spent any time here? There are lots of gorgeous character neighborhoods, the people are friendly and it's a good place to raise a family. The city has an excellent arts community and the city has it's own unique identity.

I have to second this post.

I've lived in all sorts of cities, and Fort Worth has a great blend of livability and culture, especially when you consider it as part of the overall Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington metro area. It's hard to beat it - there's so much to do, you'll never be able to do it all!

You can live an urban lifestyle, a suburban lifestyle, or a rural lifestyle (all are feasible), and nothing is really too far out of reach for a family to enjoy.

Did you actually read her post? The reason she would move here is to be close to family. The family is in Texas, not the Northeast. Your advice to move there instead wasn't helpful.

"More affordable"? Not even.

"Friendlier"? Hardly.
